How to Get to Playa de Somo

Getting to Playa de Somo is part of the adventure and, depending on where we're coming from, we can choose from several options, each with its own charm. If we're coming from Santander, the most iconic and recommended way is, without a doubt, the Los Reginas ferry. This regular service offers us a short and pleasant journey across the Bay of Santander, gifting us spectacular views of the city and the bay itself before disembarking directly at the small port of Somo, just a few meters from the beach. It's an experience we highly recommend, especially if the weather is good, as it allows us to leave the car in Santander and avoid parking worries at the beach.

If we prefer the convenience of the car, Somo is easily accessible by road. From the A-8 motorway, we'll take the exit towards Solares and then follow the signs to Somo and Ribamontán al Mar. The CA-440 road will take us directly to the town. Once there, we'll find several parking areas, some paid and others free, although in high season they can fill up quickly. We always advise arriving early to secure a good spot. There are also bus lines connecting Somo with Santander and other nearby towns, offering a comfortable and eco-friendly alternative for those who don't want to drive.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Somo welcomes us with an impressive expanse of fine, golden sand, which seems endless. It's one of those beaches where we can walk for kilometers, feeling the softness of the sand under our feet and enjoying the vastness of the landscape. The quality of the sand is excellent, ideal for building sandcastles, for a game of beach volleyball, or simply for spreading out our towel and relaxing. Its great length, approximately 2.5 kilometers, joins seamlessly with Playa de Loredo, creating a continuous stretch of sand almost 4 kilometers long that is a delight for lovers of long walks along the Cantabrian shore.

The waters of Somo are typical of the Cantabrian Sea: cool, clean, and with waves that vary depending on weather conditions. They are waters with character, often choppy, which makes them a paradise for surfers. However, on calm days or in areas closer to the shore, they are perfectly suitable for swimming and family enjoyment. The clarity of the water often allows us to see the sandy bottom, and the feeling of immersing ourselves in it is always revitalizing. We love the energy these waters transmit, that feeling of being in direct contact with the force of nature. It's always important to pay attention to lifeguard instructions and the warning flags, as currents can be strong in some areas.

We'll find several chiringuitos (beach bars) where we can enjoy a cold drink, an ice cream, or a snack without straying too far from the sand. Near the beach, in the town of Somo itself, there is an excellent selection of restaurants to sample the local cuisine. For those looking to relax to the fullest, there are umbrella and sunbed rental services, allowing us to travel lighter. And, of course, as already mentioned, the ample parking areas facilitate access by car. Additionally, the beach is a hive of activity with various surf schools and equipment rentals, making it a true sports zone for lovers of water sports.
