How to Get to Playa de San Marcos

Getting to Playa de San Marcos is a simple and rewarding experience, allowing us to gradually immerse ourselves in the charm of northern Tenerife. If you're coming from the south of the island, the most common route is to take the TF-1 motorway towards Santa Cruz, then connect to the TF-5, the northern motorway, towards Icod de los Vinos. The journey from Tenerife South Airport (Reina Sofía) usually takes about an hour to an hour and a quarter, depending on traffic, and gifts us with spectacular panoramic views of the coast and Tenerife's topography.

If your starting point is the metropolitan area of Santa Cruz or La Laguna, or the popular tourist areas of Puerto de la Cruz or Los Realejos, access is even more direct via the TF-5. Once we arrive in Icod de los Vinos, the beach is well signposted. We'll head towards the coast, descending a couple of kilometers until we reach the bay. The good news is that the beach has a fairly large public parking lot right next to it, which greatly facilitates car access. Although it can fill up during high season or on weekends, we always find an option.

For those who prefer public transport, the TITSA company offers regular bus lines connecting Icod de los Vinos with the island's main population centers. From the Icod bus station, located in the town center, we can take a taxi or even enjoy a pleasant 20-30 minute walk downhill to the beach. We, whenever possible, opt for the car to have the freedom to explore the surroundings, but the bus is a comfortable and economical alternative.

The Sand and Water

One of the most distinctive and, in our opinion, most fascinating aspects of Playa de San Marcos is its sand. It's not the blonde or golden sand many are accustomed to, but a black volcanic sand, of basaltic origin, that constantly reminds us we are on an island forged by the force of volcanoes. This sand is incredibly fine and soft to the touch, and has the peculiarity of heating up quickly under the sun, making it very pleasant for lying down and relaxing.

We love the feeling of walking barefoot on it, feeling the heat it radiates and the contrast with the sea breeze. The dark color of the sand also creates a spectacular visual effect when it meets the intense blue of the Atlantic Ocean. It's an image that invites contemplation and is undoubtedly very photogenic, especially at sunset when the reddish tones of the sky reflect on the dark sand.

As for the water, it's one of the strong points that make this beach an ideal destination for relaxation and families. Playa de San Marcos is very well sheltered by a natural breakwater and the surrounding cliffs, which makes its waters remarkably calm with little wave action. The water's transparency allows us to easily see the bottom, inviting us to a refreshing and safe swim. We find it perfect for swimming, floating, and simply enjoying the calm of the sea. The water temperature, although it's the Atlantic, is usually very pleasant for most of the year, allowing us to enjoy a good dip even in the winter months. The combination of black sand and serene waters is, for us, a true gift of nature.
