How to Get to Playa de San Mamede

Getting to Playa de San Mamede is relatively straightforward, although it requires a bit of attention to avoid getting lost on the secondary roads that lead to this beautiful corner of Carnota. If coming from Santiago de Compostela, take the AG-56 highway towards Noia, and then continue on the AC-550, a coastal road that will gift us with spectacular views. From A Coruña, the journey is similar, following the coast southwards.

Once in the municipality of Carnota, we must watch for signs to the beach. Access is usually well signposted, although sometimes the signs are small. It's ideal to use GPS and search for 'Playa de San Mamede, Carnota'. Normally, we will find a non-paved parking area, but sufficient for leaving the car, a short distance from the sand. We recommend arriving early in the summer months to secure a good spot, as, although it's not a crowded beach, it has its loyal following. The final stretch to the sand is usually a comfortable, flat path, suitable for almost everyone.

The Sand and Water

If there's something that captivates us about Playa de San Mamede, it is, without a doubt, its sand. We are faced with fine sand of a light golden tone, which feels incredibly pleasant underfoot. It's perfect for building sandcastles with the little ones, for spreading out our towel and enjoying the sun, or simply for feeling the pleasure of walking barefoot along the shore, letting the waves caress our feet. Its cleanliness is notable, a reflection of the respect for the environment that characterizes this area.

The waters of Playa de San Mamede deserve special mention. They are, in general, quite calm, somewhat protected by the configuration of the coast, which makes them a safe and very appealing place for swimming. Although we are on the Atlantic, and the water temperature is what one would expect in Galicia – cool but invigorating in summer – its transparency and the quality of the bathing experience are exceptional. It's a delight to immerse oneself in them and feel the purity of this sea, sometimes observing the marine life hidden beneath the surface in the rockier areas at the ends of the beach. Regarding facilities, we will find showers to rinse off the sand and salt after a refreshing swim, a detail that is always appreciated. Also, as mentioned, there is a nearby parking area, although it's not a formally delimited parking lot, but rather a dirt clearing where we can park. In the summer months, it's common to find a chiringuito or a drinks and ice cream stand, perfect for replenishing energy with a coffee, a soft drink, or a snack while enjoying the views. It's important to remember that these services may vary from year to year or depending on attendance, but the basics are usually covered for a pleasant beach day.

Best Time to Visit

Playa de San Mamede is a destination we can enjoy at different times of the year, each with its own charm. However, if our main goal is to enjoy swimming and the sun, the best time to visit is, without a doubt, summer, that is, the months of July and August. During these months, temperatures are warmer, hours of sunlight are longer, and the waters, although always refreshing, reach their most pleasant temperature. Furthermore, it's when all the beach services are fully operational.

Nevertheless, if what we seek is maximum tranquility and enjoying the scenic beauty without crowds, spring (May and June) and autumn (September and October) are wonderful seasons. Days are usually sunny, temperatures mild, and the coastal landscape shines in all its splendor, with a light that invites photography and long walks along the shore. It's the perfect time for nature and photography lovers, when the beach gifts us spectacular sunsets and the feeling of peace is absolute. Even in winter, a sunny day can be ideal for a revitalizing walk, although swimming is reserved for the bravest.
