How to Get to San Blas Bay Beach

Getting to San Blas Bay Beach is part of the adventure and, to be honest, it's what contributes to its charm and exclusivity. It's not an easy access, and that's precisely what keeps it so pristine and less crowded than other beaches in In-Nadur (Gozo).

By Car and on Foot

If you're coming from Victoria (Rabat), the capital of Gozo, or from any other point on the island, you'll need to head towards the village of In-Nadur. From there, follow the signs to San Blas Bay. The road narrows and becomes quite steep as you approach the coast. There is a parking area at the top of the hill, where the paved road ends. From there, access to the beach is exclusively on foot, via a very steep concrete path. We strongly recommend wearing comfortable and secure footwear, as the descent can be slippery and demanding, especially on the way back up. It's a good workout, but the view and the beach are worth every drop of sweat!

Transport Alternatives

For those who prefer to avoid the steep walk, especially in the hotter months, there is a peculiar option: some locals offer a 4x4 transport service from the parking lot to the beach. This service usually has a small cost, but it can be a blessing if you're traveling with young children, elderly people, or simply don't feel like the effort. We saw it as an interesting option for those seeking greater comfort. However, the experience of going down and up the path is, in itself, part of the adventure of visiting this beach in In-Nadur (Gozo).

The Sand and Water

The first thing that captivated us when setting foot on San Blas Bay Beach was, without a doubt, its sand. It's an intense reddish-orange, almost terracotta color, a hue we have rarely seen in other beaches in Malta. This sand is fine and soft to the touch, making it perfect for relaxing and sunbathing. The contrast between this warm color and the vibrant turquoise blue of the waters is simply spectacular, creating a landscape worthy of the best photographs.

The water of San Blas Bay is crystal clear and generally very calm, protected by the surrounding cliffs. This makes it an ideal place for swimming and enjoying a refreshing dip. The entrance to the sea is gentle and shallow at first, which is an advantage for those traveling with children, although, as we will mention later, the general access to the beach can be a challenge for the little ones. At the edges of the bay, where the sand meets the rocks, the water is even clearer, revealing a fascinating underwater world for snorkeling lovers. The predominant type of seabed in the swimming area is sand, which guarantees a comfortable experience for your feet.

Services and Facilities

Due to its somewhat remote nature and complicated access, San Blas Bay Beach is not a beach with a wide range of services, and that's part of its 'wild' charm. We always recommend it to those seeking a more natural and less commercialized experience.

During the summer months, especially between June and September, it's common to find a chiringuito or a small van offering cold drinks, ice cream, and some snacks. It's a basic but much-appreciated service after the walk. It's also possible to rent umbrellas and sunbeds during the high season, which is a great advantage if you don't want to carry your own.

As for other facilities, there are portable or very basic Toilets/WC available in summer. However, don't expect showers or changing rooms. The philosophy here is one of simplicity and connection with the surroundings. Parking is available at the top of the hill, as we already mentioned. There are no regular lifeguards, so caution is key when swimming. We always advise our travelers to come prepared: bring your own water, sunscreen, towels, and everything needed to spend the day, as the services, although present, are limited.
