As experts in international beach tourism, we are always on the lookout for those special corners that promise a unique experience, far from the hustle and bustle and overcrowding. And in Croatia, a country blessed with a spectacular Adriatic coast, we have found a true gem that embodies the essence of virgin beauty and tranquility: Playa de Ručica. Located on the enigmatic island of Pag, in the Lika-Senj region, this beach is not just a destination, but an adventure. It is a place where nature has sculpted a landscape that seems taken from another planet, an astonishing contrast between the crystal blue of the Adriatic and the whitish rock formations that have earned it the nickname 'lunar landscape'.

Ručica invites us to disconnect, to immerse ourselves in its waters of unheard-of transparency, and to marvel at an environment that defies the conventional. It is one of those beaches that you have to earn a little, as its access, although possible by car, involves a small detour on unpaved roads, which helps maintain its pristine character and its atmosphere of serenity. Here, time seems to stand still, and the only sound that will break the silence is the gentle lapping of the waves or the occasional cry of a seagull. For those seeking an authentic beach experience, where natural beauty is the undisputed protagonist, Playa de Ručica is, without a doubt, a destination that should be on your list.

How to Get to Playa de Ručica

Getting to Playa de Ručica is part of the adventure and what contributes to its wild and less crowded charm. We highly recommend the island of Pag as a destination in itself, and Ručica is one of its best-kept treasures.
The beach is located in the northeastern part of the island of Pag, very close to the small and picturesque village of Metajna. If we are coming from the mainland, the most common way is to cross the Pag bridge or take a ferry to Žigljen if traveling from the northern part of Croatia. Once on the island, our main destination will be Metajna.

By Car

From Novalja, the largest and most well-known town on Pag, the journey to Metajna takes approximately 15-20 minutes by car. Once in Metajna, the road to Ručica becomes a bit more rustic. You must follow the signs, or simply ask the locals, who will be happy to guide you. The paved road ends shortly after Metajna, giving way to a dirt and gravel track. This section, although not long, requires driving with caution, especially if your car is not an off-road vehicle. The path winds through a rocky landscape, already offering us the first spectacular views that anticipate the beauty of the beach. At the end of the track, you will find an informal parking area where you can leave your car. It is important to arrive early in the high season if we want to secure a good spot, as space is limited. From the parking lot, there is a short downhill walk to the beach. It is not a complicated access, but we advise wearing comfortable shoes.

By Boat

For those who prefer a different experience or simply wish to avoid the dirt road, Playa de Ručica is also accessible by boat. Many boat tours from Metajna or Novalja include a stop at Ručica, often combining it with visits to other nearby coves like Beritnica or Slana. This is an excellent option if we are looking for a relaxing way to get there and enjoy the views from the sea. Furthermore, it allows us to explore the coast in a unique way, admiring the geology of Pag from another perspective.

The Sand and Water

When we think of Playa de Ručica, the image that comes to mind is that of a pebble beach, and it is precisely that characteristic that distinguishes it. Here we will not find the typical fine golden sand; instead, the ground is covered with fine and smooth pebbles, polished by the waves over the centuries. These pebbles, in whitish and grayish tones, perfectly complement the lunar landscape surrounding the beach, creating a very particular and attractive color palette. Walking on them can feel a bit different from sand, so we recommend wearing water shoes or sandals for greater comfort, especially when entering and exiting the sea.

But if there is something that leaves us breathless in Ručica, it is, without a doubt, its water. The waters of Ručica are of a clarity and turquoise color that rival the most exotic destinations in the world. The transparency is such that we can see the seabed with astonishing ease, even at several meters depth. This purity of the water is due to several factors: the absence of large nearby urban settlements, the rocky composition of the seabed, and the Adriatic currents that keep the water constantly renewed. It is a true pleasure to immerse yourself in these waters, which are usually cool and revitalizing, perfect for combating the Croatian summer heat. The shore has a gentle slope, making access to the sea comfortable and safe, although the depth increases gradually. For snorkeling lovers, it is a paradise: the visibility is exceptional and the marine life, although not abundant in large species, is enough to entertain us with small fish and some underwater rock formations.

Services and Facilities

It is crucial to understand that Playa de Ručica is a wild nature beach and, therefore, its services and facilities are extremely limited, if not non-existent. This is precisely one of the reasons for its charm and the tranquility it offers, but also something we must keep very much in mind when planning our visit.
