Introduction

If there is one place in Gozo that captures the essence of Mediterranean beauty with a distinctive touch, it is undoubtedly Playa de Ramla Bay. Known locally as Ramla l-Ħamra, meaning 'red sand', this stunning cove is a true treasure on the island's northeast coast, in the municipality of Ix-Xagħra. We have had the pleasure of visiting it on several occasions, and each time it surprises us with its natural charm and serene atmosphere. It is, without exaggeration, one of the most iconic and beloved beaches in the entire Maltese archipelago.

What makes Playa de Ramla Bay so special is, of course, its sand. Unlike more common beaches, here we find a reddish-golden hue that shines under the sun, creating a spectacular contrast with the turquoise blue of its waters and the green of the surrounding vegetation. This unique landscape makes it a paradise for both photography lovers and those simply seeking a quiet place to unwind. Furthermore, its history is intertwined with local mythology, as it is believed that the legendary Calypso's Cave, mentioned in Homer's Odyssey, is located in the cliffs flanking the bay. Exploring Playa de Ramla Bay is immersing yourself in an experience that combines nature, history, and pure relaxation.

How to Get to Playa de Ramla Bay

Getting to Playa de Ramla Bay is part of the adventure of discovering Gozo. For most international travelers, the first step is to fly into Malta International Airport (MLA). From there, we recommend taking a taxi or bus to Cirkewwa, at the northern tip of Malta's main island. From Cirkewwa, you take a ferry to Mgarr, Gozo's main harbor. The ferries are frequent and the journey takes about 25 minutes, offering spectacular views of the channel and the islands of Comino and Gozo.

Once in Mgarr, Gozo, we have several options to get to Playa de Ramla Bay, located near Ix-Xagħra (Gozo). The most comfortable way for many is to rent a car, which gives us the freedom to explore Gozo at our own pace. The beach is well signposted from Mgarr and from main towns like Victoria. There is also a public bus service that operates regularly from Mgarr and Victoria (Rabat) to the vicinity of the beach. Buses are an economical option, although they can be a bit slower. If we prefer a direct journey, taxis are available at Mgarr harbor and in Victoria. Access to the beach is relatively easy, with a paved road leading to a nearby parking area, which is a considerable advantage for those traveling with luggage or with family.

The Sand and Water

The most distinctive and, in our opinion, most captivating feature of Playa de Ramla Bay is undoubtedly its sand. It is not the typical golden or white sand found on many Mediterranean beaches, but a unique mix of reddish and orange tones, giving it an almost Martian appearance. This unusual coloration is due to the geological composition of the area and is what gives the beach its name and fame. Walking barefoot on this sand is a soft and pleasant experience; it is fine, perfect for building sandcastles or simply feeling its texture underfoot while we relax.

As for the water, Playa de Ramla Bay offers us unbeatable conditions. Its waters are notably crystal clear and calm, with a transparency that allows us to see the sandy bottom without difficulty. The entry into the sea is gentle and shallow, making it an exceptionally safe and suitable place for young children and inexperienced swimmers. We have enjoyed long swims in its peaceful waters, which usually have a very pleasant temperature during the summer months. It is an ideal place for swimming, splashing around, and simply enjoying the freshness of the Mediterranean. The combination of the red sand and clear waters creates a stunning visual contrast that, along with the natural surroundings, makes each visit memorable.

Services and Facilities

Despite its natural and somewhat 'wild' appearance, Playa de Ramla Bay does not lack the essential services we look for for a comfortable day at the beach. In fact, it has been awarded the Blue Flag, a recognition that certifies the quality of its waters, its environmental management, and the availability of services.

Among the facilities we find, the following stand out:

• Chiringuitos and Kiosks: There are several establishments where we can buy cold drinks, ice cream, snacks, and light meals. They are perfect for recharging without having to leave the beach.
• Sunshades and Sunbeds: During the high season, it is possible to rent sunshades and sunbeds, allowing us to enjoy the beach with maximum comfort and sun protection.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: The beach has shower facilities and public toilets, which are very convenient for rinsing off salt and sand before heading home or continuing to explore Gozo.
• Lifeguard Service: For our peace of mind and safety, especially during the summer months, there is a team of lifeguards monitoring the beach and ready to act if needed. This service is crucial, especially if we are traveling with children.
• Parking: In the vicinity of the beach, we find a parking area, which facilitates access for those arriving by car. Although it can fill up in high season, it is always an advantage to have this facility.
