How to Get to Playa de Porto Rico

Getting to this desert paradise is an exciting part of the adventure. The most common and efficient way is to fly directly to Dajla Airport (DXB). Several airlines, including flights from Casablanca and other Moroccan cities, as well as international connections, operate to this airport. Once there, most kitesurf camps and hotels in the lagoon area offer transfers, or we can take a taxi that will take us to our destination in about 30-45 minutes, depending on the exact location of our accommodation in the lagoon.

For those who prefer a road adventure, it is possible to drive to Dajla from cities like Agadir or Laayoune. However, one must consider that the distances are considerable and the journey can be long, crossing desert landscapes that, although impressive, require good planning and a suitable vehicle. Once in the lagoon area, access to the different points of Playa de Porto Rico is usually via well-marked dirt tracks, although it is always advisable to follow the directions from our accommodation or locals so as not to get lost in the vastness of the desert.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Porto Rico welcomes us with simply exquisite sand. It is a fine and golden sand, almost pristine, that stretches for kilometers, inviting us to walk barefoot and feel its softness under our feet. The surrounding dunes, shaped by the wind, add a scenic and majestic touch to this desert landscape that merges with the sea. It is perfect sand for relaxing, for building sandcastles—if that's what we fancy—or simply for enjoying a good book under the Moroccan sun.

We must be clear that Playa de Porto Rico is not an urban beach with massive tourist infrastructure. Its charm lies precisely in its more wild and natural character. However, the growing popularity of Dajla as a water sports destination has led to the emergence of surf camps and schools that offer essential services for visitors.

In the vicinity of the beach and along the lagoon, we will find:

• Parking: Although there are no formally signposted parking lots as in cities, there are large informal and free parking areas near the beach access points and next to surf camps. It is easy to find a place to leave our vehicle safely.
• Chiringuitos: Many of the kitesurf camps have their own restaurants and 'chiringuitos' where we can enjoy local and international meals, refreshing drinks, and a relaxed atmosphere. These places are usually open to the public, even if we are not staying at the camp. They are perfect spots for socializing and sharing experiences.
• Equipment Rental: This is, without a doubt, the star service of the area. We find numerous kitesurfing and windsurfing schools that offer lessons for all levels, from beginners to advanced, as well as rental of state-of-the-art equipment. We can also rent paddleboard or kayak gear.
• Lifeguard Service: Although there is no public and permanent lifeguard service along the entire length of the beach, kitesurf camps usually have qualified staff and rescue boats to ensure the safety of their students and clients in the lagoon. This is an important factor to consider if we practice water sports.
