How to Get to Playa de Porto Palermo

Getting to Playa de Porto Palermo is, in itself, part of the adventure and charm of this destination. This beautiful bay is located on the Ionian coast of Albania, approximately halfway between the cities of Vlora and Saranda, although it is closer to the charming town of Himara. The most comfortable and recommended way to access it is by private or rental car, which gives us the flexibility to explore the surroundings at our own pace.

By Car

If we are coming from Vlora, the journey will take approximately an hour and a half to two hours, depending on traffic and any stops we make to admire the scenery. The coastal road, known as SH8, is a spectacular scenic route, full of curves and with impressive views of the Ionian Sea and the mountains. From Saranda, the trip is similar in duration and also offers unforgettable panoramas. If we start from Himara, the journey is much shorter, just 20-30 minutes, making this town an ideal base for exploring the area.

It is important to consider that, although the main road is in good condition, the final access to Playa de Porto Palermo involves taking a turnoff that leads directly to the bay. This stretch can be a bit narrower and more winding, but it is well signposted. Once there, we will find informal parking areas to leave our vehicle, usually free of charge, although in high season it may be necessary to search a bit more or pay a small fee if a private individual is managing a plot.

By Public Transport

Public transport in this area of Albania is less frequent and direct. There are buses or 'furgons' (shared minivans) that connect the main coastal cities like Vlora, Himara, and Saranda. However, these services usually drop passengers off on the main road (SH8) and do not go directly down to Porto Palermo Bay. From the nearest stop on the SH8, we would have to walk a good stretch downhill (and then uphill to return) or try to get a local taxi, which can be difficult and expensive. For this reason, we insist that a car is the most practical option to fully enjoy the beach and its surroundings.

The Sand and Water

Here, we will not find the fine, golden sand that characterizes other Mediterranean beaches. Instead, the beach consists of a mixture of sand and small pebbles, what we call a mixed sand type. This combination of elements gives it a rustic and natural character, and makes the ground type equally mixed, offering a different tactile experience under our feet. The pebbles, polished by the constant ebb and flow of the waves, are smooth and pleasant, and the mix with the sand creates a comfortable bed for our towels.

We are faced with crystal-clear waters of astonishing transparency, allowing us to see the seabed with exceptional clarity. This purity of the water is one of the most valued characteristics of the Vlora beaches and the entire Albanian Riviera, and in Porto Palermo it reaches its peak expression.
