How to Get to Playa de Portbou

Getting to Playa de Portbou is part of the adventure and, fortunately, it's quite simple. Given its strategic location, this corner of the Costa Brava is well connected by both road and rail, facilitating access from different points on the peninsula and southern France.

By Car

If we choose the car, the most common way to get there, we can do so via the N-260 road, which leads directly to Portbou. From Girona, the journey takes approximately one hour and twenty minutes, while from Barcelona, the duration is about two hours. Once in the town, the beach is located in the center, and there are several parking areas nearby, both paid and free, although in high season it can be a bit more difficult to find a spot. Our recommendation is to arrive early to secure a good place and be able to enjoy the day without worries.

By Train

For those who prefer a more sustainable and relaxed option, Portbou has an important train station, which is an international connection point. Regional and long-distance trains arrive here, making it an excellent alternative to avoid traffic and parking problems. From the station, the beach is just a few minutes' walk away, which adds an extra level of comfort to the experience. It's a fantastic way to start our vacation, enjoying the scenery without stress.

The Sand and Water

One of the most distinctive characteristics of Playa de Portbou is, without a doubt, the composition of its coastline. Here we won't find the fine, golden sand of other coasts, but a particular mix that gives it a rustic and natural charm. The predominant `tipo_arena` is coarse, often mixed with small pebbles or stones, which classifies the `tipo_suelo` as mixed. This means that, while it's comfortable for sunbathing, some may prefer to wear water shoes to enter and exit the water more easily. Its waters are famous for their clarity and cleanliness, awarded year after year with the `bandera_azul`, a mark of environmental quality.
