How to get to Playa de Pinija

Getting to Playa de Pinija is quite straightforward, which adds to its appeal. It is located in Petrčane, a small coastal village about 12 kilometres northwest of central Zadar. We believe the best way to get there depends on our starting point and preferences.

By car

If we are travelling by car, whether our own or a rental, access is very comfortable. From Zadar, we can take the D306 road towards Nin and Petrčane. The journey is short, about 15-20 minutes, and the signs for Petrčane and the Hotel Pinija (around which the beach extends) are clear. The beach has nearby parking options, some paid, especially if we are staying at the Hotel Pinija, which offers parking for its guests. The freedom a car gives us to explore the surroundings is unrivalled.

By bus

For those who prefer public transport, there are regular bus lines connecting Zadar with Petrčane. The main bus station in Zadar is a good starting point. Schedules are usually frequent during the high season, although we always recommend checking for the latest updates. Once in Petrčane, Playa de Pinija is a short walk from the main bus stop, making it accessible even without a private vehicle.

Taxi or ride-hailing services

Another comfortable, though slightly more expensive, option is to take a taxi or use ride-hailing services from Zadar. It is a quick and direct alternative, ideal if we are travelling with a lot of luggage or prefer the comfort of a door-to-door transfer.

The beach and the water

When we talk about Playa de Pinija, we must make it clear that we are not dealing with a fine Caribbean sandy beach, and that, for us, is part of its charm and Croatian character. Its ground type is predominantly pebble, complemented by some gravel areas and convenient concrete platforms that facilitate access to the sea and offer comfortable spaces for sunbathing. This composition has one immense advantage: the clarity of the water is simply spectacular.

The waters of Playa de Pinija are a true delight for the senses. With an intense turquoise colour that fades to a deep blue, they are famous for their transparency. We can see the seabed with amazing ease, even at several metres depth, making it a paradise for snorkelling enthusiasts. The presence of pebbles instead of sand means the water remains crystal clear, without suspended particles, even with wave agitation or the movement of swimmers. It is a pleasure to immerse ourselves in these pure and refreshing waters.

Furthermore, the entry into the sea is usually gradual in many of its sections, making it very safe for children and for those who do not feel entirely comfortable in deep water. The concrete platforms are perfect for spreading out our towel, setting up our umbrella, and enjoying a day in the sun without worrying about sand sticking everywhere. However, for our comfort, we always recommend wearing water shoes (aqua socks) to protect our feet from the pebbles, both when walking along the shore and when entering and exiting the sea. It's a small detail that makes a big difference to the experience.

• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: We won't have to go far to enjoy a good coffee, a soft drink, an ice cream, or a light meal. Several nearby chiringuitos and restaurants offer a varied gastronomic selection, from quick snacks to more elaborate dishes with sea views. It's perfect for those days when we don't want to leave the beach.
