Located a short distance from the vibrant city of Rethymno, this beach is a true hidden treasure that offers an authentic experience of the Rethymno (Crete) beaches. When we think of Greek beaches, images of golden sand and turquoise waters often come to mind, and Petres does not disappoint, but adds its own distinctive charm with a unique mix of landscapes and an atmosphere that invites both rest and action.

From the moment we arrived, we were enveloped by a feeling of peace. The beach stretches for a considerable length, ensuring we can always find a spot for ourselves, even in the busiest summer months. Its particular composition of sand and small pebbles gives it a special character, and the waters, remarkably clean and clear, are a constant invitation to dive in. Furthermore, the presence of the Petres river, which flows into the sea at one end of the beach, creates a unique landscape and adds a touch of freshness to this idyllic setting. It is a destination we highly recommend to anyone seeking a genuine Rethymno (Crete) beach experience.

What really sets Playa de Petres apart from other Greece beaches is its versatility. For those seeking calm, the gentle murmur of the waves and the sea breeze are the perfect soundtrack for a day of relaxation under the sun. However, for the more adventurous spirits, the often ideal wind conditions make it a paradise for water sports. It's a place where we can go from absolute stillness to adrenaline in a matter of minutes, a duality we greatly appreciate and that makes each visit a different and memorable experience.

How to Get to Playa de Petres

Getting to Playa de Petres is relatively straightforward, especially if we are in the Rethymno area. We always recommend renting a car in Crete, as it gives us the freedom to explore at our own pace and discover less accessible spots. From Rethymno, the journey is approximately 10-15 kilometers to the east, following the coastal road. The signage is quite clear, and the road offers spectacular views of the Aegean Sea.

By Car

• From Rethymno city: We take the national road E75 heading east. After passing some small villages and stretches of coastline, we will find signs for Playa de Petres or for the Petres Gorge area. The trip shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes, depending on traffic. There are several areas where we can park the car, some more organized near the 'chiringuitos' (beach bars) and others more informally along the road or on dirt tracks adjacent to the beach. Parking is generally free and easy to find, which is a big plus.

By Bus

• Public transport: Although less frequent than to the more central beaches, there are bus lines connecting Rethymno with nearby villages, such as Episkopi, which is a short distance from the beach. It is advisable to check the updated schedules at the KTEL bus station in Rethymno, as they can vary depending on the season. From the nearest bus stop, we may have to walk a bit to reach the sand, but the walk is usually pleasant and allows us to appreciate the rural surroundings.

Other Means

• Motorbike or scooter: A popular option in Crete, especially for couples or solo travelers, is renting a motorbike or scooter. It offers the same flexibility as a car, but with the advantage of being easier to park and navigate narrower roads. The ride to Petres is very enjoyable on a motorbike.
• Taxi: If we prefer comfort, a taxi from Rethymno will take us directly to the beach. The cost will be higher, but it's a good option if we don't want to worry about driving or parking.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Petres offers us a very particular tactile and visual experience regarding its sand and waters. It is not the typical fine, golden sand beach often associated with the Caribbean, but rather presents a fascinating mix of darker sand and small pebbles or gravel. This combination gives it a more rustic and natural character, which we personally love. The pebbles are smooth and rounded by the constant ebb and flow of the waves, making walking along the shore a pleasant sensation and a gentle foot massage.

The type of ground is predominantly mixed, with sections where sand is more abundant and others where pebbles take center stage. This variability not only adds visual interest but also has practical benefits: the pebbles help keep the water exceptionally clear, as sediment is not stirred up as easily by the movement of the sea. We found that this mix is perfect for building small sandcastles in the sandier areas and for enjoying the purity of the water in the pebble areas.

As for the water, it is simply spectacular. The waters of the Aegean Sea at Petres are famous for their clarity and their color ranging from pale turquoise near the shore to a deep blue further out. The temperature is ideal for swimming during the summer months, warm and refreshing at the same time. It is common to see the seabed several meters deep, which invites snorkeling, although there isn't a great variety of marine life in this specific area, the transparency is a spectacle in itself.

One aspect to consider is that Playa de Petres is often exposed to the north winds.
