How to Get to Playa de Petra

Getting to Playa de Petra is relatively straightforward and part of the adventure of exploring Lesbos. The island has Mytilene International Airport 'Odysseas Elytis' (MJT), which receives flights from Athens and other Greek cities, as well as direct charter flights from various European cities during the high season. Once at the airport, we have several options to get to Petra, which is about 55-60 kilometers to the northwest.

• Car rental: For us, this is the most recommended option. Renting a car gives us the freedom to explore not only Playa de Petra, but also the charming nearby villages and the pristine landscapes of Lesbos at our own pace. There are several rental agencies at the airport and in Mytilene.
• Taxi: Taxis are available at the airport and can take us directly to Petra. It's a comfortable option, though more expensive, especially if we're traveling in a group.
• Bus (KTEL): There is a public bus service connecting Mytilene with Petra. Schedules can vary by season, so it's advisable to check them in advance. It's the most economical option and allows us to mingle with local life.
• Motorbike or scooter: For the more adventurous, renting a motorbike or scooter is an excellent way to get around the island, enjoying the wind in your face and the panoramic views on the way to Playa de Petra.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Petra surprises us with a combination of sand and small pebbles that give it a unique character. We could classify it as 'mixed' sand, where the softness of the sand intertwines with the texture of the small stones, especially at the shoreline and as we enter the sea. For us, this mix doesn't detract from comfort; on the contrary, it contributes to the clarity of its waters and the feeling of being in a well-preserved natural environment.

But what truly captivates us about Playa de Petra are its waters. They are simply spectacular! Of a vibrant turquoise blue, they are incredibly clear and calm, making them ideal for swimming and relaxing. The entrance to the sea is gentle and gradual, without significant drops, which is a plus, especially if we're traveling with children or elderly people. The water temperature during the summer months is pleasantly warm, inviting long swims and enjoyment of the sea breeze. • Sunbeds and umbrellas: Along the beach, we'll find numerous spots where we can rent umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the sun without worries. Many chiringuitos offer this service in exchange for a purchase.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: The gastronomic offer is varied and delicious. From small chiringuitos serving refreshing drinks and snacks, to tavernas and restaurants with sea views where we can taste authentic Greek cuisine, with specialties of fresh fish and seafood. Eating with our feet almost in the sand is a luxury we love!
• Showers and Toilets/WC: For our comfort, the beach has showers to rinse off the salt and sand after a swim, as well as clean and well-maintained public toilets.
• Lifeguards: During the high season, Playa de Petra has lifeguard stations, which gives us additional peace of mind, knowing that professionals are watching over our safety and that of our loved ones.
• Parking: There are parking areas near the beach, making access easy if we arrive by car.
• Equipment Rental: For those looking for a bit more action, some spots on the beach offer rental of water sports equipment, such as kayaks, paddle boards, or even small boats.
