If what we're looking for is to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse ourselves in the authentic essence of the Aegean, we've undoubtedly arrived at the right place. This charming beach, located on the eastern part of the island, offers us a perfect combination of tranquility, crystal-clear waters, and a relaxed atmosphere that invites us to disconnect from the world.

Playa de Perani is not one of Greece's largest or most famous beaches, and that's precisely where much of its charm lies. It's a corner where time seems to stand still, where the gentle sound of the waves and the sea breeze are the only soundtrack. It's the kind of place we return to again and again because it makes us feel at home, providing us with that much-desired peace that is often hard to find in more crowded destinations. We'll be surprised by its simplicity and the warmth of its atmosphere, ideal for recharging our energy.

How to Get to Playa de Perani

Getting to Playa de Perani is part of the adventure and, fortunately, it's quite simple. The island of Salamina is very well connected to the Greek mainland, making it an accessible destination even for a day trip from Athens. We usually opt for the ferry, which is the most common and picturesque way to get there.

From Athens and Piraeus

The main route is to take a ferry from the port of Perama, in Piraeus. The ferries are very frequent, departing every 15-20 minutes during the day, and the journey is incredibly short, just about 15 minutes, allowing us to admire the views of the Saronic Gulf. We'll arrive at the port of Paloukia, the main port of Salamina.

From Paloukia to Perani

Once in Paloukia, we have several options to get to Playa de Perani:

• Local bus: There are bus routes connecting Paloukia with different points on the island. We should ask for the line that goes towards the Perani or Ampelakia area. It's an economical option and allows us to mingle with the locals.
• Taxi: At the port of Paloukia, we'll always find taxis available. It's the fastest and most comfortable option, especially if we're carrying luggage or prefer not to worry about schedules.
• Rental car: If we've decided to explore the island at our own pace, renting a car is an excellent idea. Playa de Perani is well signposted, and the journey from Paloukia is short, offering us the freedom to move around all of Salamina without restrictions.
• Motorbike or scooter: For the more adventurous, renting a motorbike or scooter in Salamina town is a fantastic way to travel the coastal roads and discover hidden coves.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Perani welcomes us with a charming combination of mixed sand and small pebbles. It's not a typical fine, golden sand beach; instead, it features a mix of coarser sand grains and smooth pebbles which, far from detracting from its appeal, give it a rustic and natural character. This composition keeps the water incredibly clear and transparent, as the sand isn't easily stirred up by the wave movement. It's a delight for our feet and a different experience from purely sandy beaches.

The waters of Perani are, without exaggeration, one of its greatest attractions. They are of a mesmerizing turquoise blue, calm, and notably warm during the summer months. The entrance to the sea is gentle and shallow, making it an ideal place for families with young children or for those who, like us, simply want to splash around and relax without worries. The calmness of the water also makes it perfect for snorkeling and observing the marine life hiding among the rocks and seaweed near the shore. Every swim is a pleasure, a true immersion in the serenity of the Aegean.

Services and Facilities

Despite its tranquil atmosphere and moderate size, Playa de Perani has a range of services that make our stay very comfortable and pleasant. Don't expect large resorts or dazzling infrastructure, but rather services that integrate naturally with the environment and local life.

• Chiringuitos and Tavernas: Right on the beach or a very short distance away, we'll find charming Greek tavernas that function as authentic chiringuitos. Here we can enjoy delicious local cuisine dishes, fresh fish, snacks, and, of course, refreshing drinks. Many of these tavernas offer table and chair service directly on the sand or on terraces with sea views, allowing us to enjoy a meal with our feet almost in the water.
• Sunbeds and umbrellas: It's common for the nearby tavernas and establishments to have sunbeds and umbrellas for rent. Generally, the rental is for the full day and is often included if we consume something at the establishment. It's an ideal option to protect ourselves from the sun and relax comfortably.
• Parking: Although there isn't a formal, very large parking lot, it's easy to find space to park the car along the road bordering the beach or in the immediate vicinity. It's usually informal parking, but sufficient for the number of visitors.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: Many of the tavernas and restaurants in the area usually offer showers and toilets to their customers. It's a great detail that allows us to freshen up after a swim in the sea or before leaving.
