How to Get to Playa de Paleochori

Getting to Playa de Paleochori is relatively straightforward, and the transportation options are varied, allowing each traveler to choose the one that best suits their preferences. The island of Milos has its own national airport, Milos Island National Airport (MLO), with regular flights from Athens, especially during the high season. For those who prefer the maritime route, ferries from Piraeus port in Athens are an excellent option, connecting Milos with the mainland and other Cycladic islands.

Once in Milos, the most recommended way to explore the island and comfortably reach Playa de Paleochori is to rent a car, motorbike, or quad. The roads are in good condition, and the journey from Adamas, the main port, to Paleochori takes approximately 20-25 minutes by car. The route is picturesque, crossing the island's interior before descending towards the southern coast. There is also a public bus service from Adamas connecting to Paleochori, although schedules may be less frequent outside the high season. For us, the freedom of a private vehicle is unmatched, allowing us to stop at viewpoints and explore hidden coves along the way.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Paleochori offers us a unique sensory experience, starting with its sand and waters. The sand here is volcanic, giving it a distinctive color ranging from reddish and orange tones to ochre, often mixed with small pebbles and fine gravel. This mixed composition is a constant reminder of Milos's geological nature and the energy bubbling beneath the island's surface. Walking barefoot on it is a particular sensation, different from the fine white sands we might find on other Milos beaches.

As for the water, it is undoubtedly one of the main attractions. The waters of Paleochori are crystal clear and of a beautiful turquoise hue, irresistibly inviting for a swim. But what makes them truly special are the underwater fumaroles and thermal springs found on the seabed. At some points on the beach, as we venture into the sea, we can feel the water become noticeably warmer, creating a kind of open-air natural spa. It's a surprising and very relaxing experience, especially on cooler days. The water's clarity also makes it an ideal spot for snorkeling, allowing us to observe marine life and the volcanic rock formations on the bottom.

Playa de Paleochori is one of the most organized beaches on Milos, making it a very comfortable option for spending a full day under the sun. We find excellent service infrastructure that guarantees a pleasant stay. Along its different sections, we can find wide areas with sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent, perfect for those seeking to relax with all the comforts. It's advisable to arrive early in the high season to secure a good spot.

Furthermore, the beach has several chiringuitos and restaurants (tavernas) offering delicious local cuisine and refreshing drinks. Some even use geothermal cooking techniques, harnessing the heat from the volcanic ground to prepare dishes, a culinary curiosity we shouldn't miss. We also have access to clean and well-maintained showers and toilets/WCs. For everyone's peace of mind, there are lifeguards monitoring the bathing areas during peak hours. The parking is spacious and easily accessible, which is a major plus if we've chosen to rent a vehicle to reach this wonderful Milos beach.

Best Time to Visit

Choosing the best time to visit Playa de Paleochori and, in general, the island of Milos, is key to enjoying our experience to the fullest. We highly recommend late spring (late May and June) or early autumn (September and early October). During these months, the weather is idyllic, with pleasant temperatures that allow us to fully enjoy the sun and sea without the stifling summer heat. Moreover, the influx of tourists is lower than in the high season, allowing us to enjoy the beach more peacefully and find better prices on accommodations and flights.
