How to Get to Playa de Paleochora

Getting to Playa de Paleochora is part of the adventure and, fortunately, there are several options to suit our preferences and budget. The most common way to access this corner of southwestern Crete is through Chania, the provincial capital, which has an international airport (Chania International Airport 'Daskalogiannis', CHQ) and a major port.

From Chania, the road journey is approximately 70-80 kilometers, which translates to about 1.5 to 2 hours by car. We recommend renting a car if we want maximum flexibility to explore the surroundings at our own pace. The road winding through mountains and valleys is scenic, although it can be a bit winding in some sections. It is always advisable to drive with caution and enjoy the panoramic views offered by the Cretan landscape.

For those who prefer not to drive, there is a regular KTEL bus service from the central bus station in Chania to Paleochora. Schedules vary by season, but there are generally several connections per day. This is an economical and reliable means of transport, allowing us to relax and admire the scenery without worrying about directions. The buses are usually comfortable and air-conditioned.

Furthermore, during the high season, Paleochora is well connected by ferry to other coastal villages in southwestern Crete, such as Sougia, Agia Roumeli (the endpoint of the Samaria Gorge), Loutro, and Sfakia (Hora Sfakion). If we arrive in Crete via Heraklion airport (HER), the journey by car or bus to Chania will be longer, adding an additional 2-3 hours to the trip. Whatever our choice, the path to Playa de Paleochora is an invitation to the beauty of Crete.

The Sand and Water

As mentioned, the village sits on a peninsula, which gives us a diversity of beaches, each with its own charm. The main and most extensive beach is Pachia Ammos, which literally means 'coarse sand'. Here, the sand is a mixture of golden grains, some finer and some coarser, giving it a very pleasant texture underfoot and a color that contrasts wonderfully with the blue of the sea. It is a wide beach, perfect for walking or simply lying in the sun.

On the other side of the peninsula, we find the pebble beach of Chalikia, which offers a different experience. The sea-polished pebbles are ideal for those who prefer not to carry sand everywhere and offer a unique sensation when walking. Both beaches share a fundamental characteristic: the incredible clarity of their waters. The waters of the Libyan Sea are known for their purity and their impressive range of tones, ranging from the lightest turquoise near the shore to a deep blue in the open sea.

We are always impressed by the cleanliness of the water at Playa de Paleochora. It is so transparent that we can easily see the seabed, making it an excellent place for snorkeling, even close to the shore. The water temperature is generally warm and very pleasant during the summer months, inviting us to take a refreshing dip. The entry into the sea is usually gentle and gradual, especially at Pachia Ammos, making it very safe for children and those who are not experienced swimmers. In summary, the combination of the mixed sand and the crystal-clear waters of Playa de Paleochora offers us an idyllic setting to enjoy the natural beauty of Crete.
