How to Get to Playa de Pachia Ammos

Getting to Playa de Pachia Ammos is part of the adventure and, for us, a factor that contributes to its wild charm. The island of Nisyros itself is accessible by ferry from ports like Mandraki in Kos, or from other Dodecanese islands. Once on Nisyros, the main port is Paloi, from where we can take a local bus or rent a vehicle (car or scooter) to head towards the starting point of the hike.

The journey by car or scooter will take us along winding roads and volcanic landscapes to a point on the east coast, beyond the village of Paloi and before reaching Lies. We will look for a sign, sometimes subtle, indicating the trail to the beach. This is where the true on-foot odyssey begins. The vehicle can be left in an improvised parking area by the side of the road, which is usually free and unsupervised, so we recommend not leaving valuables in sight.

The Footpath

From the parking point, a downhill hike of approximately 15-20 minutes awaits us. The trail is dirt and, in some sections, can be a bit steep and slippery, especially if it has rained recently or if we are wearing inappropriate footwear. As we descend, the panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and Pachia Ammos Bay become increasingly spectacular, serving as motivation for every step. It is crucial to wear comfortable and secure footwear, like trekking shoes or sport sandals, and to bring a bottle of water, especially in the summer months.
