How to Get to Playa de Pachia Ammos

Getting to Playa de Pachia Ammos is part of the adventure and offers us the opportunity to enjoy the stunning landscapes of inland Crete. The beach is located in Paleochora, a town on the southwest coast of the island. From the city of Chania, the drive takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, covering approximately 70-75 kilometers. The route is scenic, winding through mountains and small traditional villages, so we recommend taking your time and enjoying the journey.

By Car

We consider the car to be the most comfortable and flexible option for reaching Pachia Ammos. There are several car rental companies at Chania Airport (Daskalogiannis) and in the city itself. Once in Paleochora, you'll find various parking areas near the beach, some free and others paid, especially during high season. The road is in good condition, although it has some curves, so it's important to drive carefully.

By Bus

For those who prefer not to drive, there is a regular bus service operated by the KTEL company connecting Chania with Paleochora. The buses are modern and comfortable, and the journey offers spectacular views. Once in Paleochora, Playa de Pachia Ammos is a short walk from the town center and the bus station. It's an economical and sustainable option that allows you to relax and enjoy the scenery without worries.

By Ferry

During the summer months, Paleochora is also connected by small ferry lines to other coastal villages in southwestern Crete, such as Sougia, Agia Roumeli (the exit of the Samaria Gorge), and Loutro. If you're coming from an excursion in this area, the ferry can be a charming way to reach Paleochora and, consequently, Playa de Pachia Ammos.

The Sand and Water

The first thing that catches our attention when stepping onto Playa de Pachia Ammos is, without a doubt, its sand. As its name indicates, it's a coarse type of sand, with a golden hue that shines under the Cretan sun. Unlike finer sands that stick to everything, this sand is comfortable to walk on and doesn't adhere as much to the skin, which is a plus. It stretches for about 600 meters, offering ample space for everyone to find their perfect spot, even on the busiest days.

The waters are another major highlight of this beach in Chania (Crete). They are famous for their transparency and turquoise blue color, inviting you to dive in instantly. We have found that sea conditions at Pachia Ammos are generally very good. Facing west, the beach is somewhat more exposed to westerly winds, but large waves that prevent swimming rarely form. In fact, when there's a bit of breeze, it's very pleasant. The water clarity invites snorkeling, especially at the ends of the beach where you can find small rocky formations that harbor marine life. Don't expect coral reefs, but do expect a pleasant underwater exploration.
