How to Get to Playa de Oyambre

Getting to Playa de Oyambre is relatively straightforward, although it's important to know the directions to avoid getting lost in the last few kilometers. If we are coming from the A-8 motorway, from either the east (Santander) or the west (Asturias), the most convenient exit is number 269, which directs us towards San Vicente de la Barquera and Comillas. Once we take that exit, we will join the CA-131 road.

From the CA-131, we must pay attention to the signposted turn-offs towards Oyambre. The beach is a few kilometers from San Vicente de la Barquera. The road that leads directly to the beach is narrow in some sections, winding through green meadows and small villages, which already hints at the natural beauty awaiting us. Upon arrival, we will find several parking areas, some free and others paid during the high summer season. Our recommendation is to arrive early if you visit the beach in July or August, as parking can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. The beauty of the journey, with panoramic views of the sea and mountains, is already part of the experience of visiting this jewel of Valdáliga.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Oyambre welcomes us with fine, golden sand, stretching for almost two kilometers. It's soft, pleasant-to-the-touch sand, perfect for long barefoot walks or for children to build their sandcastles without difficulty. The beach is flanked by an impressive dune system, which is part of the Oyambre Natural Park and which we must respect by avoiding trampling the vegetation to preserve this delicate ecosystem. These dunes are not only a highly valuable landscape feature but also act as a natural barrier protecting the inland area.

As for the water, Oyambre's waters are the typical Cantabria waters: clean, fresh, and of an intense emerald color. The water quality is usually excellent, an aspect the beach reaffirms each year by obtaining the Blue Flag. However, it's important to note that, being a beach open to the Cantabrian Sea, the waves can be considerable. This makes it a paradise for surfers and other water sports enthusiasts, but it also demands caution, especially on days with a strong sea. At low tide, the sea retreats, leaving a vast expanse of sand and forming small lagoons ideal for children to play safely, while at high tide, the waves break powerfully, offering an unforgettable natural spectacle. We always recommend paying attention to the lifeguards' instructions and the flags signaling the sea conditions.

We highly value that such a spectacular beach combines its wild beauty with essential amenities. During the summer season, the beach has lifeguards who watch over the safety of swimmers, something fundamental given the occasional strength of the waves. It is crucial to follow their instructions and respect the designated swimming and water sports areas.

You will also find showers to rinse off the sand and salt after a good swim, as well as public bathrooms/WCs, a service always appreciated. The gastronomic offerings are concentrated in several chiringuitos and small restaurants in the surrounding area, where you can enjoy a snack, a light meal, or a dinner with sea views. These establishments usually offer everything from sandwiches and ice creams to more elaborate dishes with local products. For those arriving by car, as we already mentioned, there is a large parking area, although in summer it may be paid and fill up. Furthermore, given its popularity among surfers, there are several surf schools that offer lessons and equipment rental (boards, wetsuits), consolidating the Sports Zone of the beach. The presence of these services contributes to making the experience at Playa de Oyambre complete and satisfying for all visitors.
