How to Get to Playa de Orthi Ammos

Getting to Playa de Orthi Ammos is already part of the adventure and the reward for its wild character. Located near the historic Frangokastello castle, on the south coast of the Chania province, its access requires a bit more effort, but every step is worth it.

From Chania or Rethymno

If we are coming from the city of Chania, the drive takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes (about 80 kilometers). From Rethymno, the journey is a bit shorter, around 1 hour and 15 minutes (about 60 kilometers). We always recommend renting a car to explore Crete, as it gives us the freedom to move at our own pace.

The Route and the Dune Challenge

Once we arrive near Frangokastello, we can leave the car in an informal, unpaved parking area. From here, the most distinctive part of the journey begins: the crossing of the famous dunes. There is no paved path directly to the sand; instead, we must descend via natural trails that wind through the dunes. This descent can be a bit steep and sandy, so we advise wearing comfortable shoes. It's a small 'sacrifice' that is instantly forgotten when the view of the beach opens up before our eyes.

Services and Facilities

If we are looking for a beach with all the comforts and tourist services at hand, Playa de Orthi Ammos might not be our first choice. And that is precisely part of its charm and what makes it such a special destination for lovers of the natural and authentic.

A Minimalist Approach

Orthi Ammos is characterized by its wild and pristine nature. This means that facilities are minimal or non-existent. We will not find showers, public toilets, lifeguards, or large managed sunbed and umbrella complexes. The philosophy here is that of nature in its pure state. The beach offers us its intrinsic beauty, and it is up to us to come prepared to enjoy it as it is.

What We Can Find

The most fundamental and often the only service we will find is an informal parking area. It is an unpaved dirt space at the top of the dunes where we can leave our vehicle before starting the descent to the beach. It is important to remember that, as there is no supervision, we must be responsible for our valuables. During the high season, we might occasionally come across a small 'kantina' selling cold drinks and some snacks, but this is not a guaranteed service. Our recommendation is to always bring our own water, food, and everything we might need for the day, including a portable umbrella if we want shade. The lack of full accessibility is another point to consider due to the sandy terrain and the descent through the dunes.
