Introduction
Today we venture into the magical coast of A Coruña, in the heart of the Rías Baixas, to discover one of those jewels that Galicia jealously guards: Playa de Ornanda (Las Gaviotas). Located in the charming municipality of Porto do Son, this cove is a true haven of peace, a place where time seems to stand still and nature reveals itself in its purest, most captivating state. If you're looking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle, immerse yourself in crystal-clear waters, and feel embraced by a dreamlike landscape, you've come to the right place.
This beach, also affectionately known as 'Las Gaviotas', offers a different beach experience. Far from large crowds and massive tourist developments, here we find the essence of the Galician coast: the perfect combination of fine golden sand, a calm sea inviting for a swim, and a natural setting that captivates at first sight. It's the ideal destination for those who value authenticity, scenic beauty, and the opportunity to create unforgettable memories in a serene and family-friendly atmosphere.
How to Get to Playa de Ornanda (Las Gaviotas)
Getting to Playa de Ornanda (Las Gaviotas) is part of the adventure and, at the same time, relatively straightforward, although we highly recommend traveling by car for greater comfort and to explore the surroundings at your own pace. From Santiago de Compostela, the Galician capital, the journey takes approximately 50-60 minutes. We'll take the AG-11 highway towards Ribeira and, before reaching this town, we'll turn off towards Porto do Son. Once in the municipality, the signs to the beach are clear, guiding us along local roads that wind through coastal landscapes and small rural villages.
From A Coruña, the trip is a bit longer, around an hour and a half. We'll drive south on the AP-9 towards Santiago, and then follow the same directions as from the capital. We mention that, although the main road is in good condition, the last few kilometers to the beach may be on narrower roads, but they are always well signposted. Near the beach, you'll find designated Parking areas, which greatly facilitate access and unloading your belongings. The lack of direct public transport to the cove reinforces the idea that the car is the best option to fully enjoy the freedom offered by this Galician corner.
The Sand and Water
One of the biggest attractions of Playa de Ornanda (Las Gaviotas) is, without a doubt, its fine golden sand. When you step on it, you'll feel an exquisite softness that invites you to take off your shoes and enjoy long walks along the shore. It's the perfect type of sand for children to build sandcastles, to lay out a towel and let yourself be carried away by the sound of the waves, or simply to feel the contact with nature under your feet. Its homogeneous texture and the absence of stones or pebbles in most of the cove make it especially comfortable and pleasant.
As for the water, we find the characteristic waters of the Galician Atlantic: crystal clear, clean, and refreshing. The cove, being sheltered, offers exceptionally calm swimming conditions, with gentle waves that make it a safe and pleasant place to swim. The color of the sea varies from an intense blue in the distance to turquoise tones closer to the shore, inviting us to dive in and enjoy a revitalizing swim. The water quality is excellent, allowing us to easily observe the seabed and appreciate the rich biodiversity that inhabits its depths. It's a true pleasure to plunge into these waters and feel the purity of the Porto do Son coast.
Services and Facilities
Although Playa de Ornanda (Las Gaviotas) is characterized by its natural and relatively pristine environment, this doesn't mean it lacks basic services to ensure a comfortable stay for its visitors. We are aware that comfort is key to fully enjoying a day at the beach, and therefore, we are pleased to confirm that this cove has some of the essential facilities we all look for.
Among the available services, we highlight the presence of Showers, ideal for removing salt and sand after a refreshing swim. You'll also find Bathrooms/Toilets, a fundamental service we always appreciate having at hand. During the peak summer season, the safety of bathers is guaranteed thanks to the presence of Lifeguards, who watch over everyone's well-being and offer peace of mind, especially for families with children. As already mentioned, the nearby Parking greatly facilitates access. However, it's important to emphasize that you won't find a large offering of beach bars or restaurants right on the sand here; the philosophy of Ornanda is more about connecting with nature, so we recommend bringing your own provisions if you plan to spend the whole day. This helps maintain its natural charm and relaxed atmosphere, away from the commercial bustle of other beaches.
