It's not the largest or busiest beach, and precisely in that intimacy lies much of its charm. It's a cove that offers us a respite, a place where time seems to stand still and nature embraces us with its serenity.

For us, Ondartza represents that corner we always want to return to. Its privileged location, right next to Mundaka's picturesque harbor, gives it a unique atmosphere. How to Get to Playa de Ondartza

Getting to Playa de Ondartza is relatively easy, and part of the experience is the journey itself through the charming town of Mundaka. If you're coming by car, Mundaka is well-connected by road. From Bilbao, we'll take the BI-631 and then the BI-2235, a journey that will take approximately 40-50 minutes, depending on traffic. Once in Mundaka, you'll find signs for the town center and the harbor. The beach is very close to the harbor, accessible on foot from any point in the municipality.

Regarding parking, Mundaka has several areas where you can leave your car, especially around the harbor or at the town entrances. It's important to consider that during the summer months and on good-weather weekends, parking can be more difficult, so we recommend arriving early or considering public transport. From Gernika-Lumo, there are regular bus lines connecting to Mundaka, offering us a comfortable and sustainable alternative to avoid the car.

If you're already in Mundaka, we simply need to head towards the harbor and, from there, follow a short walk. The beach is easily accessible on foot, without major slopes, making it comfortable for all visitors. It's a walk that allows us to soak up the town's maritime atmosphere before setting foot on Ondartza's sand.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Ondartza welcomes us with fine-grained sand and a pleasant golden hue. It's soft sand underfoot, perfect for walking barefoot, building sandcastles with the little ones, or simply lying down to sunbathe. Being a sheltered cove, the sand remains in very good condition and invites us to enjoy it at any time of day. The feeling of walking along its shore is one of pure relaxation, with the gentle sound of the waves as the only soundtrack.

As for the water, it's one of Ondartza's strong points. Being protected by the breakwater and the bay's configuration, its waters are usually calm and crystal clear, especially on calm days. This makes it an ideal place for swimming, even for children or those who prefer a more peaceful sea. The water's clarity allows us to see the bottom, and its temperature, although we're in the Cantabrian Sea, is quite pleasant in the summer months. We dare say it's a small oasis of calm within the dynamic Basque coast, ideal for swimming and cooling off without worries.

Services and Facilities

Despite being a modest-sized beach, Playa de Ondartza has the essential services that make our visit more comfortable. During the summer season, it's common to find lifeguard service, which gives us extra peace of mind, especially if we're with children. Safety is always a priority, and knowing there are professionals watching over us is a great relief.

We also have showers, a much-appreciated service for washing off sand and salt before heading home or venturing into town. We'll find trash bins distributed along the beach to keep it clean and respect the surrounding natural environment. However, it's important to remember that Ondartza is not a beach that offers extensive leisure or dining infrastructure directly on the sand. Don't expect beachfront chiringuitos or umbrella and sunbed rentals.

For everything else, Mundaka's charm is just a few steps away. In town, we'll find a varied offering of bars, restaurants, and small shops where we can buy something to drink, an ice cream, or enjoy a good meal with harbor views. The proximity to the urban center is an advantage, as it allows us to combine beach relaxation with the town's life and services without needing to take the car.

Best Time to Visit

The choice of the best time to visit Playa de Ondartza will depend a lot on what we're looking for in our experience. If our main goal is swimming and fully enjoying the sun, the summer months (July and August) are undoubtedly the most suitable. During this time, temperatures are more pleasant, the water is at its optimal point for swimming, and the beach has all services active, including lifeguards. However, keep in mind that it's also the peak season, so if you're looking for more tranquility, we recommend going early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

For those who prefer calm and scenic beauty over a swim, spring and autumn are magnificent seasons. The temperatures are mild, ideal for taking long wa
