As beach tourism experts, we have had the pleasure of visiting countless coastlines around the world, but there is something special about Olympic Beach in Pieria, Greece, that always draws us back. It's not just a beach; it's a complete destination that encapsulates the essence of a perfect Mediterranean holiday. Located in the beautiful region of Pieria, at the foot of majestic Mount Olympus, this beach offers us an idyllic combination of natural beauty, excellent services, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes it an unforgettable place.
From the moment we set foot on its soft sand, we feel an instant connection to this place. The crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea invite us to dive in, while the sea breeze gently caresses us, promising days of pure relaxation and fun. It's a perfect canvas where summer memories, children's laughter, and golden sunsets are painted, etching themselves into our memory. For us, Olympic Beach is synonymous with escape, disconnection, and the simple joy of Greek coastal life.
This jewel of the Pieria coast is not only famous for its beauty but also for its commitment to quality, proudly flying the Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies the excellence of its waters, the cleanliness of its environment, and the quality of its services. This gives us the peace of mind of knowing we are in a place that meets the highest standards, making every visit a safe and pleasant experience for all who venture to discover it. It is, without a doubt, one of the most outstanding Pieria beaches and a model to follow for other Greece beaches.
How to Get to Olympic Beach
Getting to Olympic Beach is surprisingly straightforward, making it even more attractive to travelers from everywhere. We always recommend considering several transportation options, depending on your starting point and travel preferences.
By Plane
The nearest international airport is Thessaloniki Airport (SKG), also known as 'Macedonia'. From there, Olympic Beach is about 100 kilometers away, which translates to a car journey of around an hour and a half. We usually rent a car directly at the airport, which gives us the freedom to explore the region at our own pace. There are many car rental companies available, and the roads in Greece are in very good condition, making the trip easy.
By Car
If you are coming from other parts of Greece or neighboring countries, the road network is excellent. The E75 highway (A1) is the main route connecting Thessaloniki with Athens and passes very close to Pieria. Taking the exit towards Katerini and then following the signs to 'Paralia Katerinis' or 'Olympic Beach', you will arrive without any problems. We always appreciate the comfort of having our own vehicle to be able to make spontaneous trips to the surrounding areas, such as Mount Olympus or ancient Dion.
By Bus
For those who prefer public transport, it is also a viable option. From the central bus station in Thessaloniki (KTEL Makedonia), there are frequent buses to Katerini, the capital of the Pieria province. The journey takes about an hour. Once in Katerini, there are local buses connecting Katerini with Olympic Beach (known locally as 'Olympiaki Akti'). These buses are frequent during the high season and are an economical and efficient way to reach the beach. This option is perfect if you don't want to worry about parking.
Other Means
It is also possible to arrive by train to Katerini and then take a bus or taxi. However, for us, the option of renting a car from Thessaloniki remains the most comfortable and versatile, especially if we plan to spend several days and explore the region thoroughly. Whichever method you choose, the journey to Olympic Beach is part of the adventure and already offers us the first spectacular views of the Pieria region.
The Sand and Water
When we think of Olympic Beach, the first thing that comes to mind is its exquisite sand and tempting waters. It is, without a doubt, one of the main attractions that make us return again and again to this coast of Pieria.
The Sand
The sand at Olympic Beach is of exceptional quality. It is fine, soft, and of a pale golden color that shines under the Greek sun. Walking barefoot on it, we feel a pleasant, almost therapeutic sensation. It stretches for several kilometers, offering us ample space to find our perfect spot, whether near the livelier 'chiringuitos' or in quieter areas for total relaxation. Its fine texture makes it ideal for building sandcastles, something the little ones greatly enjoy, and for long sunset walks when the sun paints the horizon in orange and pink hues.
The Water
The waters of the Aegean Sea at Olympic Beach are simply wonderful. They are crystal clear, with a transparency that allows us to see the sandy bottom without difficulty. What most impresses and pleases us is their shallowness, especially in the first few meters from the shore. This makes it an exceptionally safe beach for families with young children, who can splash and play without worries. The gradual entry into the sea allows even less experienced swimmers to feel comfortable and safe. Furthermore, the waters are usually very calm, protected from strong currents, which reinforces its reputation as a family paradise.
The water temperature is another plus. During the summer months, from June to September, the water reaches a very pleasant temperature, perfect for cooling off from the heat of the sun without feeling u
