How to Get to Playa de Myrties

Getting to Playa de Myrties is relatively straightforward, making it an accessible destination for all travelers. The beach is located on the west coast of Kalymnos, about 8 kilometers northwest of Pothia, the island's capital and main port. We usually recommend several transportation options, depending on each person's preference and budget.

From Pothia, the capital

• By bus: There is a regular bus service connecting Pothia with the coastal villages of the west, including Myrties and Massouri. Buses are an economical and reliable option. Schedules are usually frequent during the high season, although it is advisable to check them in advance, as they may vary. The journey offers panoramic views of the island, making it a small adventure in itself.
• By taxi: Taxis are available in Pothia and at the airport. It is a faster and more comfortable option, especially if we are traveling with luggage or in a group. The price is reasonable for the distance and will drop us off right at the beach or at our nearby accommodation.
• Car or scooter rental: For those who prefer the freedom to explore at their own pace, renting a car or scooter is an excellent alternative. There are several rental agencies in Pothia and at the airport. The road to Myrties is well-maintained and offers beautiful landscapes. Furthermore, having our own vehicle will allow us to easily discover other Kalymnos beaches and hidden corners of the island. Parking in Myrties is available, although it can be a bit busy during the high season.

From Kalymnos National Airport (KGS)

Kalymnos National Airport (KGS) is conveniently located just about 6 kilometers from Pothia and about 10-12 kilometers from Myrties. From the airport, we can take a taxi directly to the beach or our hotel, or pick up a pre-booked rental car. The connections are smooth and the journey is short, allowing us to start enjoying the beach almost as soon as we land.

The Sand and Water

The experience at Playa de Myrties begins the moment we set foot on its peculiar terrain. It is not a typical fine, golden sand beach, but is distinguished by its composition of small, polished gray pebbles mixed with some coarse sand. This characteristic gives it a rustic and natural look that we love. The pebbles, often warmer than sand, are comfortable to walk on (although water shoes can be useful for the more sensitive) and have the advantage of not sticking to the skin and clothes like fine sand. It is one of the peculiarities that make this Kalymnos beach so special.

But if the sand (or pebbles) is distinctive, the water is undoubtedly the star of the show. The waters of Playa de Myrties are famous for their clarity and intense turquoise and emerald blue tones. The underwater visibility is exceptional, making it a paradise for snorkeling. We can spend hours observing the marine life hiding among the rocks and pebbles on the seabed. The entrance to the sea is gentle and gradual, making it ideal for families with children and for those who enjoy a calm swim. Furthermore, the waters are usually very calm, protected from the prevailing winds, ensuring a safe and pleasant swimming experience. The cleanliness of the water is a testament to the good management of the beach, often recognized with the Blue Flag, a mark of environmental quality. We love the feeling of diving into these waters, feeling the freshness and purity of the Aegean Sea with every stroke.
