How to Get to Playa de Messakti

Getting to the magnificent Playa de Messakti is relatively straightforward, and the journey experience is part of the charm of exploring Ikaria. The beach is located on the north coast of the island, very close to the picturesque villages of Gialiskari and Armenistis, which are important reference points. If we arrive by plane, Ikaria National Airport (JIK) is our gateway. From there, we can rent a car, an option we always highly recommend to explore the island with complete freedom and discover its most secret corners. The road leading to Messakti is well-signposted and offers spectacular views of the mountainous landscape and the Aegean Sea.

For those who prefer the ferry, Ikaria has two main ports: Evdilos, on the north coast, and Agios Kirykos, the capital, in the south. Messakti is much closer to Evdilos, about 15-20 minutes by car, making it the most convenient option if our main goal is the northern part of the island. From Agios Kirykos, the journey is longer, about an hour, but equally picturesque. There are also local bus services connecting the main villages and beaches, although their frequency can be limited, especially outside the high season. However, for us, the freedom of a rental car is incomparable, allowing us to stop at any viewpoint or small cove that catches our eye on our way to this splendid Playa de Messakti.

The Sand and Water

The experience of Playa de Messakti undoubtedly begins with its sand. It is fine and golden sand, incredibly soft underfoot, stretching for about 600 meters, offering ample space for all its visitors. The color of the sand, a toasted honey tone, contrasts wonderfully with the deep blue of the Aegean Sea, creating a postcard-worthy landscape. It's the perfect type of sand for building sandcastles with the little ones, for long barefoot walks at sunset, or simply for laying out our towel and feeling its warmth while the sun caresses us.

The entry into the sea is gentle and gradual, making it safe for children, although we always recommend caution with the waves and following the lifeguards' instructions. For us, the combination of this sublime sand and these lively, transparent waters is what truly defines the unique character of this Playa de Messakti.

One of the aspects we most appreciate about Playa de Messakti is the excellent range of services and facilities that contribute to a comfortable and worry-free beach experience. Being a very popular Ikaria beach with a Blue Flag, we find everything needed for a perfect day under the sun. To start, the parking is spacious and easily accessible, making our arrival much easier, especially during the busier months. It's always a relief not to have to worry about finding a place to leave the car.

During the day, several vibrant chiringuitos (beach bars) take care of keeping us hydrated and fed. They offer everything from coffee and ice-cold refreshments to delicious snacks and light meals, ideal for a quick lunch without having to leave the sand. Furthermore, the possibility of renting sun umbrellas and sunbeds allows us to enjoy the sun in complete comfort, ensuring a well-deserved rest. Safety is a priority, and therefore, the lifeguard service is present during the high season, providing us with peace of mind while we enjoy the sea.
