When we think of Cantabrian beaches, Playa de Merón quickly comes to mind as a perfect example of what this region has to offer. At nearly two kilometers long, it offers plenty of space even on the busiest days, always allowing us to find our own special spot. How to Get to Playa de Merón

Getting to Playa de Merón is relatively easy, making it even more attractive for a getaway. The beach is located in the municipality of San Vicente de la Barquera, on the western coast of Cantabria. For most visitors, the most convenient option is by car, as it offers the necessary flexibility to explore the surrounding area as well.

From the Cantabrian Motorway (A-8), whether coming from Santander (to the east) or Asturias (to the west), you must take exit 269 towards San Vicente de la Barquera. Once on the national road N-634, which runs through the municipality, you will find clear signs to the beach. There are several access points along the beach, with the most well-known ones leading to the main parking areas, especially near the chiringuitos.

Parking at Playa de Merón

Playa de Merón has extensive parking areas, which is a major advantage, especially during the high season. There are designated parking lots, some of which are paid during the summer months, making access to the beach very easy. We always recommend arriving early on busy days to secure a good spot, especially if visiting the beach on a weekend in July or August. The advantage is that, being so extensive, the beach can absorb a large number of visitors without feeling overcrowded once you've parked the car.

The Sand and Water

One of the aspects that most captivates us about Playa de Merón is, certainly, its sand and the quality of its waters. The sand has a very characteristic golden hue, fine and soft to the touch, making it perfect for walking barefoot, building sandcastles, or simply relaxing on it. Its expanse means that, even on the busiest days, you don't have the feeling of crowding sometimes experienced on other smaller beaches. It's ideal for long walks along the shore, feeling the ebb and flow of the waves under your feet.

The waters of Merón are, as is usual in the Cantabrian Sea, cool and crystal clear. The water quality is excellent, which has earned it the Blue Flag distinction on numerous occasions, an award for its cleanliness and the services it offers. Regarding the waves, Playa de Merón is known for being a beach open to the sea, which means it usually has waves. This makes it a paradise for lovers of water sports, especially surfing, but it also requires caution from bathers, especially with small children. Still, on days with a calm sea, its shores are perfect for a refreshing and safe swim. The tide significantly influences the width of the beach, with low tide being the ideal time to enjoy its full expanse and discover small treasures washed up by the sea.

Playa de Merón is well-equipped with a series of services and facilities that contribute to a comfortable and pleasant experience for all its visitors. Thinking about the comfort of bathers, we find:

• Showers: Available at several points on the beach to wash off the salt and sand before heading home.
• Restrooms/WC: Clean and well-maintained sanitary facilities, essential for a worry-free day at the beach.
• Parking: As already mentioned, there are extensive parking areas, some paid during the high season, but always an option to park comfortably.
• Lifeguards: During the bathing season, the beach has a lifeguard service that ensures everyone's safety, indicating sea conditions with flags and offering assistance if needed. Their presence gives us great peace of mind.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Along the beach and in its vicinity, we find several chiringuitos and small restaurants where we can enjoy a refreshing drink, an ice cream, or even a full meal with sea views. They are perfect for taking a break and recharging. Some of them also offer more elaborate food options, allowing us to taste the local cuisine without straying too far from the shore.
• Equipment Rental: Given its fame as a surf spot, it's common to find surf schools and equipment rental points (boards, wetsuits) nearby or even on the beach itself during the high season. This makes it easy for both beginners and experienced surfers to enjoy the waves.
