How to Get to Playa de Maro

Getting to Playa de Maro is part of the adventure, and while it is not complicated, it requires some planning, especially during the high season. We always recommend foresight to avoid setbacks.

By Car

From Nerja, the journey is short, just a few kilometers heading east towards Almería. You need to take the old N-340 and follow the signs towards Maro. Once in the village of Maro, you will find signposted turnoffs to the beach. Parking is limited, especially in summer. There are paid parking areas nearby, but they tend to fill up quickly. Our suggestion is to arrive early in the morning to secure a spot. The roads are winding, but the landscape is spectacular.

Public Transport and Other Options

If we prefer not to worry about parking, we can take a bus from Nerja to the village of Maro, and from there, the beach is a pleasant 15-20 minute walk downhill. There are also taxi services that can take us directly. For the more adventurous, during the high season, there are sometimes small tourist trains or shuttles that connect the village with the beach, a comfortable and different option to enjoy the journey without stress. Whatever our choice, the path to Playa de Maro already offers us views that prepare us for what awaits.

The Sand and the Water

Playa de Maro welcomes us with a combination of dark sand and fine pebbles, making it a 'mixed' type beach. This particularity, far from detracting from its charm, gives it a more natural and authentic character. We recommend bringing water shoes, especially if we plan to spend a lot of time in and out of the water, as the stones can be a bit uncomfortable for more sensitive feet. However, it is precisely this composition of the ground that contributes to the incredible clarity of its waters.

And the water of Playa de Maro is, without exaggeration, one of its greatest attractions. It is a mirror of crystal, of an intense greenish-blue hue that invites us to dive in immediately. The visibility underwater is exceptional, making it a paradise for snorkeling and diving. We can spend hours exploring its seabed, full of colorful fish, small crustaceans, and varied marine flora. The water temperature is usually very pleasant from late spring until well into autumn, allowing us to enjoy long swims. The absence of strong currents and its relative protection by the cliffs make bathing safe and pleasant for everyone.

Despite its natural and relatively pristine atmosphere, Playa de Maro has a series of basic services that ensure our comfort during the visit, without becoming a mass beach with infrastructure. We appreciate this balance between nature and functionality.

• Chiringuitos: There are a couple of chiringuitos right on the beach where we can enjoy refreshments, ice creams, and delicious local cuisine, such as the famous 'pescaíto frito' or sardine skewers. They are places with a relaxed atmosphere and spectacular sea views.
• Equipment Rental: For those who want to explore the nearby caves and waterfalls or simply enjoy the sea in another way, there are kayak and paddle surf board rental points. It is one of the most popular and recommended activities here.
• Showers: We have showers to rinse off the salt and sand after a refreshing swim.
• Lifeguards: During the summer high season, the beach has a lifeguard service, which gives us greater peace of mind, especially if we are with children.
• Sunshades and Sunbeds: It is possible to rent sunshades and sunbeds, although we always recommend bringing our own if we prefer shade and comfort on an intense sunny day, as availability may be limited.
• Parking: As already mentioned, there are parking areas, although their capacity is limited and they are usually paid. It is advisable to arrive early.
