How to Get to Marble Beach (Saliara)

Getting to Marble Beach (Saliara) is, in itself, part of the adventure and the experience. Located on the northeast coast of Thassos, it is not a beach accessed by a pristine highway, which, paradoxically, contributes to its charm and maintains a certain air of exclusivity. We highly recommend renting a vehicle, either a car or, if you prefer a more adventurous option, a quad or a motorcycle, to fully enjoy the journey.

From Limenas (Thassos Town)

The most common and direct route starts from Limenas, the island's capital. From there, we will head east, following the coastal road that passes by Makryammos. Once past the Makryammos hotel complex, the paved road gives way to a dirt track. It is important for us to know that this section, about 4 to 5 kilometers, can be a bit rough, with potholes and stones. We will drive carefully, but the reward at the end of the road is well worth the effort. During the journey, we can already glimpse flashes of the sea through the pine trees and, at times, even the marble quarries that give rise to the beach's main feature.

From Other Points on the Island

If we are coming from other towns like Golden Beach or Skala Potamia, the route also involves heading towards Limenas and then taking the aforementioned turn-off. It is essential to pay attention to the signs, although sometimes they are scarce; the flow of traffic heading to the beach is usually a good indicator. There is no direct public transport to the beach, which reinforces the need for a private or rented vehicle.

Parking

Upon arriving at the beach, we find an improvised and free parking area, usually dirt, where we can leave our vehicle. In high season, especially in July and August, this parking lot can fill up quickly, so we suggest arriving early in the morning to secure a good spot and enjoy the beach before it gets too crowded. The accessibility, although not 'total' in the strict sense, is manageable for most vehicles, as long as you drive carefully on the dirt road.

The 'Sand' and the Water

When we talk about the 'sand' of Marble Beach (Saliara), we are actually talking about something much more unique: an expanse of small white marble pebbles, polished by the constant ebb and flow of the waves. These pebbles, which vary in size from tiny particles to small stones, are what give the beach its name and its unmistakable appearance. Walking on them, we notice a texture that is both smooth and firm, very different from traditional sand. The `tipo_suelo` is clearly `guijarro` (pebble), and although it is not fine sand, the sensation underfoot is surprisingly pleasant, especially when the sun warms the stones.

What is truly extraordinary is the color of the water. Thanks to the marble seabed and the purity of the mineral, the sea takes on a turquoise and electric blue hue that seems taken from a postcard. The clarity of the water is exceptional; we can see the seabed with astonishing clarity, even at several meters depth. This transparency makes the swimming experience even more pleasurable, almost like floating in a giant pool of crystal-clear water. We have verified this on numerous occasions: the combination of the immaculate white of the pebbles and the intensity of the water's color creates a visual contrast that is hard to forget and constantly invites you to take photographs.

The entry into the sea is generally gentle, although being pebbles, it can be a bit slippery in some spots. The waters are usually calm, protected from stronger winds, making it an ideal place for a relaxing swim and for children to play safely, always under supervision. The water temperature, especially in the summer months, is very pleasant, inviting long dips and leisurely enjoyment of this marble paradise. It is, without a doubt, the main attraction of this `Thassos beach`.
