How to Get to Playa de Mandraki

Getting to Playa de Mandraki is, in itself, part of the adventure and charm of this destination. Its location on the west coast of Skiathos makes it slightly less accessible than the more touristy southern beaches with better road infrastructure, which contributes to its more tranquil and wild atmosphere. However, it's not an insurmountable challenge, and the options are varied, adapting to different preferences and budgets. The important thing is to plan ahead, especially if we visit the island during the high season, when tourist traffic is greater and transport services may be in higher demand.

By Rental Car or Scooter

For us, this is often the most comfortable and flexible option for exploring the island and reaching places like Playa de Mandraki. We can rent a car or a scooter directly at Skiathos Airport or in the capital, Skiathos Town. From the town, we'll take the main road that runs along the south coast, heading towards Koukounaries. Before reaching Koukounaries, we'll find signage indicating the turnoff towards Mandraki. It's important to know that the last stretch of the road, approximately 1.5 to 2 kilometers, is a dirt track. This track, although passable, can be uneven in some spots, especially after rain, so we recommend driving with caution. A 4x4 vehicle is not strictly necessary, but a car with good suspension or a sturdy scooter will make the journey easier. Upon arrival, we'll find an improvised Parking area in the shade of the pines, where we can leave our vehicle free of charge. The sense of adventure while traveling this less-traveled road, with pines on both sides, is an excellent prelude to the beauty that awaits us.

By Bus and on Foot

Skiathos has an excellent public bus service that connects Skiathos Town with the main beaches of Skiathos along the south coast during the season. To get to Mandraki, we can take the bus to the Koukounaries stop, which is the last stop on the line. From there, we'll have to walk. The walk is about 20-30 minutes and will take us through a beautiful pine forest. It's a pleasant stroll, especially if we enjoy light hiking and nature. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and water, especially if we visit in the height of summer. The trail is well-marked and will provide us with spectacular views of the surrounding landscape, creating a deeper connection with the natural environment of the Skiathos beach.

By Taxi

If we prefer comfort and don't want to worry about vehicle rentals or walks, we can always opt for a taxi. Taxis are available in Skiathos Town and in the main tourist areas. We can ask the driver to take us directly to Playa de Mandraki. Although the taxi will drop us off as close to the sand as possible, we'll likely have to walk a short final stretch on the dirt track, as some drivers may prefer not to venture completely onto the unpaved road. Prices are reasonable, though higher than the bus, and it's a good option if we're traveling in a group and can share the costs.

The Sand and the Water

Playa de Mandraki is certainly a spectacle for the senses, and much of its appeal lies in the quality of its sand and the purity of its waters. When we talk about beaches of Skiathos, we often think of golden sand, and Mandraki does not disappoint at all; in fact, it elevates this experience to another level. The sand here is of the 'fine' type, with a color ranging from intense gold to an almost reddish hue, especially when the sun hits it at sunset. It's soft, pleasant-to-the-touch sand, perfect for walking barefoot, for children to play, or simply for lying down and enjoying the sun's warmth. Its texture invites relaxation, to build sandcastles, or to feel it between our toes while we let ourselves be carried away by the tranquility of the surroundings. The predominant 'ground type' is, of course, 'sand', which facilitates access to the sea and allows us to enjoy a beach day without worries about uncomfortable rocks or pebbles.
