How to Get to Playa de Maltezana

Getting to Playa de Maltezana is part of the adventure of discovering Astipalea. The island has a small airport (JMK) with regular flights from Athens, especially during the summer months. Once in Astipalea, the beach is located about 9 kilometers east of Chora, the island's capital, and a short distance from the small settlement of Maltezana (also known as Analipsi).

We recommend renting a car or a motorbike to explore the island at our own pace. This gives us the flexibility to visit not only Playa de Maltezana but also other wonderful Astipalea beaches and the charming villages. The road to Maltezana is well-signposted and easily accessible. There is also a bus service connecting Chora with Analipsi/Maltezana during the high season, although schedules may be limited. A taxi from Chora is another comfortable option, though a bit more expensive. Whatever means of transport we choose, the journey will offer spectacular views of the arid landscape and the blue Aegean coast.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Maltezana is distinguished by its fine, golden sand, which feels wonderfully soft underfoot. Unlike some beaches in Greece that may be pebbly or rocky, Maltezana offers an ideal surface for walking barefoot, building sandcastles, or simply lying back and enjoying the sun. The sand is clean and well-maintained, contributing to the feeling of purity and well-being experienced here.

But what truly captivates us about Maltezana is its waters. They are incredibly crystal clear, with a turquoise hue that gently blends into the deep blue of the Aegean Sea. The most notable feature is their shallowness at the shore, making them exceptionally safe and attractive for families with young children. We can wade several meters without the water covering us completely, allowing the little ones to play and splash in total safety. The calmness of these waters, protected from the prevailing winds, is perfect for swimming peacefully and cooling off on hot summer days. It is a true pleasure to immerse oneself in this liquid paradise.

Services and Facilities

Despite its tranquil and less crowded atmosphere, Playa de Maltezana offers a range of basic services that ensure a comfortable and pleasant experience. It is not a mass-tourist beach with large resorts, which allows it to maintain its authentic charm, but it is sufficiently organized for our needs.

We can find areas where sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent, allowing us to relax in the shade and fully enjoy the day without worrying about bringing our own equipment. Furthermore, on the beach and in the nearby village of Analipsi, there are several chiringuitos and traditional tavernas. These establishments are perfect for enjoying a morning coffee, a midday refreshment, or a delicious Greek meal with sea views. Here we can savor the local cuisine without straying too far from the shore.

Regarding other facilities, the beach has showers to rinse off the salt and sand after a swim, and also bathrooms/WCs in the vicinity of the tavernas. For those arriving by car or motorbike, there is parking available, though it is usually informal along the road or in designated spaces near the tavernas. It is important to note that, while it is an organized beach, there is no constant lifeguard presence, so we always recommend caution, especially when traveling with children.

Best Time to Visit

For us, the best time to visit Playa de Maltezana and Astipalea in general is during late spring (May and early June) or early autumn (September and early October). During these months, the weather is delightfully mild and sunny, perfect for enjoying the beach and exploring the island without the intense summer heat.

Furthermore, during these seasons, the influx of tourists is lower, allowing us to enjoy Maltezana's tranquility to the fullest. The Aegean waters are already warm enough for comfortable swimming, and accommodation and flight prices are usually more attractive. If we prefer a livelier atmosphere and don't mind the crowds, July and August are the peak season months. The sun shines at its strongest and the island buzzes with activity, although the beach may be a bit more crowded. However, even in the heart of the high season, Maltezana tends to be more serene than other more popular Astipalea beaches.
