Introduction
We, as experts in international beach tourism, have had the privilege of visiting countless coastlines, but few have captivated us as much as Makris Gialos Beach on the beautiful island of Zante, Greece. This beach is not just a destination; it's an experience that etches itself into memory, a natural canvas where the blue of the Aegean Sea meets the warmth of golden sand under a radiant sun. It is, certainly, one of the most impressive Zante beaches and well worth exploring.
Located on the northeastern part of the island, Makris Gialos Beach stands out for its unique beauty: white cliffs that gently slope into the sea, forming small caves and nooks that invite adventure. The water, of astonishing clarity, reveals a seabed that is a delight for snorkeling enthusiasts. It is a Zante beach that perfectly combines the comfort of organized services with the majesty of an almost pristine landscape, a balance we deeply appreciate and that makes it an ideal choice for all types of travelers, from families with young children to couples seeking a romantic spot.
When we think of Greece beaches that truly make a difference, Makris Gialos Beach always comes to mind. Its serene atmosphere, calm waters, and natural surroundings make it a perfect refuge to disconnect from the daily hustle and bustle. Here, time seems to slow down, inviting us to immerse ourselves in the calm and beauty of Greek nature. It is a place that, with each visit, reminds us why we love traveling and discovering these hidden treasures so much.
How to Get to Makris Gialos Beach
Getting to Makris Gialos Beach is part of the adventure and, fortunately, quite straightforward. The beach is situated on the northeast coast of Zante, about 30 kilometers north of the capital, Zakynthos Town. We always recommend renting a car for maximum flexibility and to explore the island at our own pace. The road leading to Makris Gialos is picturesque, winding through olive groves and small villages, offering spectacular views of the Ionian Sea.
By Rental Car
This is, by far, the most practical option. From Zakynthos Town, simply follow the signs north, towards Volimes or Agios Nikolaos. Makris Gialos Beach is well signposted along the route. The journey takes approximately 40-50 minutes, depending on traffic and the photo stops we decide to make. There is a parking lot available right above the beach, which is very convenient, although in high season it can fill up quickly. Getting up a bit early ensures us a good spot and the chance to enjoy the beach before the crowds arrive.
By Public Bus
While there is a public bus service in Zante, it is less frequent and the routes may not be as direct to Makris Gialos Beach. Buses usually connect the capital with the main tourist centers. To reach Makris Gialos by bus, we would probably have to take a connection in Volimes or Agios Nikolaos, which would significantly lengthen the trip and limit our flexibility. We honestly do not consider it the most comfortable option for visiting this particular beach, unless we are looking for a very local and unhurried travel experience.
By Taxi or Organized Tour
Another alternative is to take a taxi from Zakynthos Town or from our accommodation. It is a more expensive option than a rental car, but comfortable if we don't want to drive. Furthermore, many boat tours that visit the famous Blue Caves and Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach) often make a stop near Makris Gialos Beach to allow passengers to swim and explore the nearby caves. This is an excellent way to combine several attractions in a single day, although it does not allow us to enjoy the beach for an extended period.
The Sand and the Water
Makris Gialos Beach is a true delight for the senses, and its sand and water are, without a doubt, its greatest attractions. We were captivated from the first moment by the quality and beauty of this natural environment.
The Fine Golden Sand
The sand of Makris Gialos Beach is of a soft golden, almost ochre hue, and its texture is predominantly fine, making it incredibly pleasant underfoot. Walking along the shore, we notice how it slides softly, inviting long barefoot walks. Unlike other Zante beaches that may have pebbles or larger rocks, Makris Gialos offers a smooth and comfortable surface, perfect for lying down and relaxing. The combination of the golden sand with the backdrop of limestone cliffs creates a spectacular visual contrast, especially when the setting sun tints the landscape with warm tones.
Crystal Clear and Turquoise Waters
But if the sand is impressive, the water is simply sublime. The waters of Makris Gialos Beach are famous for their transparency and incredible turquoise color. They are so clear that we can see the seabed with perfect clarity even at several meters depth. This clarity is partly due to the currents and the rocky composition of the bottom, which does not cloud the water. When we dive in, the sensation is of unmatched purity and freshness. It is a true pleasure to swim in these waters, which are also usually very calm, somewhat protected by the configuration of the bay.
A Snorkeling Paradise
The combination of crystal-clear waters and the presence of rock formations and small underwater caves makes Makris Gialos Beach an exceptional place for snorkeling. We always bring our masks and snorkels when we visit this beach
