How to get to Playa de Lygaria

Getting to Playa de Lygaria is relatively straightforward, given its proximity to the city of Heraklion. We always recommend renting a car for total freedom to explore not only the beach but also the charming surroundings. From Heraklion, the journey takes approximately 20-25 minutes by car, following the coastal road west towards Agia Pelagia. There is clear signage that will guide us to the beach.

By car

As mentioned, the car is the most comfortable option. From the centre of Heraklion, we take the E75 motorway heading west. After about 15 kilometres, we look for the exit towards Agia Pelagia/Lygaria. The road will take us through a landscape of hills and olive groves until we descend to the coast. Playa de Lygaria has a parking area, although in high season it can fill up quickly, so it's advisable to arrive early.

By public transport

Although less direct, it is possible to reach by bus. KTEL company buses connect Heraklion with Agia Pelagia quite frequently during the summer months. Once in Agia Pelagia, we'll need to take a local taxi or walk about 20-30 minutes along a road with some slopes to Lygaria. It's not the most comfortable option, but it's feasible for those who prefer not to drive.

By taxi

A taxi from Heraklion to Playa de Lygaria is a quick and hassle-free option, especially if we're travelling in a group. The cost can vary, but it's a good alternative if we're looking for comfort and speed, and don't want to worry about parking.

The sand and the water

Playa de Lygaria delights us with sand that is a true caress for the feet. It is predominantly fine sand, of a light golden hue, that stretches along the cove. It's perfect for building sandcastles with the kids or simply for lying down and feeling its texture under the Cretan sun. As we approach the water, the sand becomes even softer, inviting us to take a dip.

But if something captivates us about Lygaria, it's its waters. They are of astonishing clarity, with shades ranging from bright turquoise near the shore to a deep blue in the open sea. The transparency is such that we can see the small fish swimming at our feet without needing goggles. Furthermore, being protected by the surrounding rock formations, the sea in Lygaria is usually very calm, almost like a natural pool, ideal for bathing and safe enjoyment for the whole family. The water temperature, especially during the summer months, is very pleasant, inviting us to stay in for hours.

One of the great attractions of Playa de Lygaria is the quality and variety of its services, which make it a very comfortable and functional Heraklion (Crete) beach. We highly value finding everything needed for a perfect beach day, and Lygaria does not disappoint us at all.

• Sunbeds and Umbrellas: There is a wide offering of umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds available for rent, allowing us to relax in the shade and fully enjoy the day without worrying about bringing our own equipment.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: It's essential to be able to rinse off the salt and sand after a swim, and Lygaria has freshwater showers. We also find clean and well-maintained toilets, a detail we always appreciate.
• Lifeguard Service: Safety is paramount, and the presence of lifeguards during the high season gives us great peace of mind, especially if we're travelling with children.
• Parking: As mentioned before, there are designated areas for parking, although on the busiest days it can be a challenge to find a free spot. It's a very useful service for those arriving by car.

Dining and leisure options

• Beach Bars and Restaurants: The beach is dotted with charming beach bars and tavernas offering everything from refreshments and light snacks to delicious Cretan meals. It's perfect for enjoying a Greek coffee, a cold beer, or a traditional lunch with sea views. We always recommend trying the fresh fish of the day.
• Equipment Rental: For those looking for a bit more activity, there are rental points for light water sports equipment, such as kayaks or paddle surf boards. It's an excellent way to explore the cove from another perspective.
