From the moment we set foot on Playa de Lourdas, we are enveloped by a feeling of peace and awe. How to get to Playa de Lourdas

Getting to Playa de Lourdas is relatively straightforward, although, as with most Greece beaches on islands, having your own or a rental vehicle will give you unparalleled freedom. Lourdas is located on the south coast of Cefalonia, about 17 kilometres southeast of Argostoli, the island's capital.

By rental car

The most popular and recommended option is to rent a car directly at Cefalonia Airport (Kefalonia International Airport 'Anna Pollatou', code EFL) or in Argostoli. The road to Lourdas is well signposted and in good condition. The journey from Argostoli will take approximately 25-30 minutes, winding through picturesque landscapes. We will have several parking areas near the beach, some free and some paid, managed by the local chiringuitos or tavernas. It is advisable to arrive early in high season to secure a good spot.

By bus

There is a public bus service connecting Argostoli with some of the southern coastal towns, including Lourdas. However, frequencies can be limited, especially outside the peak season (July and August), and schedules may not always be convenient. It is always a good idea to check the updated KTEL Kefalonia timetables if we plan to use this means of transport.

By taxi

Taxis are a comfortable option, though more expensive. We can find taxis at the airport and in the main towns. It is useful to agree on the price with the driver before starting the trip, especially if we are coming from the airport or planning a round trip.

The sand and the water

Playa de Lourdas is distinguished by its particular composition. We will not find the fine white sand of other Cefalonia beaches, but a charming mix of coarse sand and small pebbles, which gives it a unique character. When walking, we will feel the slightly rough texture under our feet, a constant reminder of the pristine nature of this place. We recommend wearing water shoes if we are sensitive to stones, although most people adapt without a problem.

But if the sand is special, the water at Lourdas is simply sublime. Its waters are crystal clear, a turquoise blue that invites swimming and exploration. Visibility is excellent, making it a small paradise for snorkelling lovers. We can spend hours observing the marine life that inhabits the rocks and sandy bottoms. Furthermore, the waters are usually calm and shallow near the shore, making it ideal for everyone, from the youngest to less experienced swimmers. The water temperature is pleasantly warm during the summer months, offering perfect relief from the Mediterranean sun. The water quality is consistently high, reflected in its recognised Blue Flag, a mark of environmental and service excellence.

Sunbeds and umbrellas

On the beach, we will find numerous areas where we can rent umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds. It is a fantastic way to shelter from the intense sun during the midday hours and to relax in style. Prices are usually reasonable and vary slightly between different operators.

Chiringuitos and Restaurants

One of the great attractions of Lourdas is the presence of numerous chiringuitos and traditional tavernas that line the shore or are in the immediate vicinity. Here we can taste delicious Greek cuisine, from fresh seafood to traditional dishes like moussaka or souvlaki. Many of them offer service directly to our sunbed, which is a luxury. There are also cafes where we can enjoy a soft drink or a frappé coffee.

Parking and Showers

As mentioned, parking is accessible and relatively spacious, although on the busiest days it can fill up. We will find freshwater showers distributed at various points on the beach, ideal for washing off the salt and sand after a refreshing swim. There are also toilets/WCs available in nearby establishments or public ones in some areas.

Lifeguard service

During the bathing season, Playa de Lourdas has a lifeguard service, which adds an extra layer of safety, especially if we are travelling with children or are not experienced swimmers. The presence of the Blue Flag also guarantees the existence of safety measures and first aid.
