How to Get to Livadi Geranou Beach

Getting to Livadi Geranou Beach is part of the adventure and charm of discovering the most special corners of Patmos. The island itself is mainly accessible by ferry from the port of Piraeus in Athens, or from other Dodecanese islands. Once we arrive at Patmos' main port, Skala, we have several options to head to this beautiful beach.

From Skala

Skala is the nerve center of Patmos, where most services and connections are located. From here, Livadi Geranou Beach is about 7-8 kilometers to the southeast. We recommend the following options:

• By rental car or scooter: This is, without a doubt, the most comfortable and flexible way to explore Patmos and reach Livadi Geranou. There are several rental agencies in Skala. The road is picturesque, although the last stretches may be on a dirt or gravel road, adding a touch of adventure. Follow the signs towards Grikos and then turn off to the east. Signage for the beach is usually clear, but a good map or GPS is always useful.
• By taxi: You can take a taxi from Skala. It's a more expensive option, but very convenient if you don't want to drive. Make sure to agree on the price with the driver before starting the journey, or if you prefer, you can ask them to pick you up at a specific time.
• By bus: There is a public bus service in Patmos that connects Skala with Grikos and Chora. While there is no direct stop at Livadi Geranou, you can take the bus to Grikos and from there, if you feel like it, walk the rest of the way (approximately 2-3 kilometers) or take a short-distance taxi. However, for this specific beach, the bus is less practical than other options.
• On foot or by bicycle: For the more adventurous and those in good physical shape, it's possible to reach it on foot or by bicycle from Grikos. It's a pleasant walk if the weather permits, offering spectacular views of the Patmian landscape and the Aegean Sea. Keep in mind there may be some hills and the sun can be intense in summer.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Livadi Geranou Beach, one of the aspects that captivates us the most is the unique combination of its sand and the purity of its waters. It's not a typical fine golden sand beach; here we find a charming mix that gives it a distinctive and very Mediterranean character.

Type of Sand and Ground

The ground at Livadi Geranou is an interesting amalgamation of sand and small pebbles or stones. This 'mixed' characteristic is not only visually attractive, with tones ranging from creamy white to light gray, but it also has its practical advantages. The pebbles help keep the water exceptionally clear, as the movement of the sea doesn't stir up fine particles from the bottom. For some, the texture may require the use of water shoes or sandals, especially when entering and exiting the sea, but we consider it a small detail that doesn't detract from the charm of the experience.

The sandy portion is wide enough to comfortably spread out a towel and enjoy the sun, while the smaller pebbles on the shore offer a pleasant natural foot massage. It's a place where you feel truly connected with nature, away from crowded beaches with artificially fine sand.

Water Quality

The waters of Livadi Geranou are, without exaggeration, one of its greatest glories. We encounter a sea of astonishing transparency, with shades varying from a soft emerald green near the shore to a deep blue in the more distant areas. This clarity is ideal for snorkeling, allowing us to easily observe the marine life that inhabits the rocks and shallow seabeds. Small fish swim around us, creating a natural spectacle that delights young and old alike.

In addition to its transparency, the water is notably calm and warm during the summer months. The beach is relatively protected from the prevailing winds (the famous Aegean 'meltemi'), resulting in a calm sea, perfect for swimming, floating, and for children to play safely.
