How to Get to Playa de Lies

Getting to Playa de Lies is part of the adventure of discovering Nisyros. First, we must reach the island of Nisyros, which is done mainly by ferry. The most common routes depart from the nearby island of Kos, which has an international airport, or from Rhodes. There are also sporadic connections from other Dodecanese islands. Once at the port of Mandraki, the capital of Nisyros, we have several options to head to Lies.

The beach is a short distance from Mandraki and the village of Paloi. We recommend renting a scooter or a car in Mandraki, which will give us the freedom to explore not only Lies but also the rest of the island at our own pace. The road leading to the beach is easily accessible and offers panoramic views of the Aegean Sea. Alternatively, there are local bus services connecting Mandraki with Paloi, and from Paloi, a short walk or a taxi can take us to the beach. However, for a complete experience and schedule flexibility, renting a vehicle is undoubtedly the best choice.

The Sand and Water

The most distinctive feature of Playa de Lies is certainly its ground. Far from the typical golden sands of the Mediterranean, here we find a fascinating mix of dark volcanic sand and pebbles of various sizes, predominantly in gray and black tones. This unique composition not only gives it an exotic and dramatic appearance but also has a particular thermal effect, as the dark sand absorbs the sun's heat, making walking barefoot during the midday hours a challenge. We advise wearing suitable beach footwear for greater comfort.

The waters of Playa de Lies are exceptionally clean and transparent, reflecting deep blue hues that beautifully contrast with the darkness of the shore. The entry into the sea is generally gentle and the water is usually calm, making it pleasant for swimming. The main services we have been able to identify are:

• Chiringuitos/Tavernas: During the beach season, or in its vicinity, there are usually a couple of tavernas or small local chiringuitos. These establishments offer refreshing drinks, coffees, and delicious Greek food, often with specialties of fresh fish. They are the ideal place to enjoy a quiet lunch with sea views.
• Parking: Parking is usually informal, along the road that borders the beach. There is enough space to leave vehicles, although it is not an organized parking lot with formal signage. It is advisable to arrive early in the high season to secure a good spot.
• Sunbeds and Umbrellas: Some of the tavernas or chiringuitos may offer the rental of umbrellas and sunbeds to their customers, allowing us to enjoy the beach with greater comfort and sun protection. However, there is no large-scale public rental service, so if we prefer to have guaranteed shade, we can always bring our own umbrella.
