As experts in international beach tourism, we cannot fail to talk about a destination that, although perhaps not as well-known as Mykonos or Santorini, possesses a beauty that rivals the most exotic paradises in the world. We are referring to Playa de Lichadonisia, a small archipelago of volcanic islands located off the northwest coast of the island of Eubea, in Greece. This group of islets, often nicknamed the 'Greek Seychelles', is a true natural treasure offering a unique and unforgettable beach experience.

When we think of beaches in Greece, our minds often conjure images of white sand and whitewashed houses. However, Lichadonisia surprises us with a different landscape: a collection of green and lush islands, dotted with golden sandy coves and bathed by waters so incredibly clear and turquoise that we'll find it hard to believe we are in the Mediterranean. It is a place where time seems to stand still, where pristine nature is the protagonist, and where every corner invites total disconnection.

How to Get to Playa de Lichadonisia

Getting to Playa de Lichadonisia is part of the adventure and, in fact, contributes to its aura of exclusivity. Since it is an archipelago of islands, access is exclusively by sea. We usually recommend two main departure points from the mainland or the island of Eubea.

From Kavos (Eubea)

The most direct and popular way to access Lichadonisia is from the small port of Kavos, on the northwest coast of Eubea. If we are already on the island of Eubea, or have reached it via the Chalkida bridge, Kavos is our best option. From here, small boats and launches operate regular trips to the islands during the high season, generally from May to September. The journey is short, just about 10-15 minutes, and offers us spectacular views of the coast and the archipelago itself as we approach its crystal-clear waters. It is a very convenient option if we are exploring the northern area of Eubea.

From Kamena Vourla (Fthiotida)

Another alternative, especially if we are coming from central Greece or Athens, is to depart from the seaside resort town of Kamena Vourla, located in the prefecture of Fthiotida, on the mainland. From Kamena Vourla, there are also tourist boats and water taxis that take us to the islands. This journey is a bit longer, about 20-30 minutes, but equally picturesque. Kamena Vourla is known for its thermal springs, so combining a visit to Lichadonisia with a spa treatment in this town is an excellent idea for a full day of relaxation and exploration.

Travel Tips

• Schedules: It is essential that we check the boat schedules, as they can vary depending on the season and demand. During the summer, the frequency is higher, but it is advisable to arrive early to secure our spot, especially on weekends.
• Organized tours: Many local tourism companies offer day trips that include transportation to the islands, time for swimming and exploring, and often a stop for lunch at one of the chiringuitos. This can be a convenient option if we prefer not to worry about logistics.
• Parking: In Kavos and Kamena Vourla, we will find parking areas where we can leave our car while we enjoy our excursion to the islands.
• Preparation: Let's not forget to bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and enough water, as although there are basic services on the islands, it's better to go prepared.

The beaches of Lichadonisia, especially the main one on the island of Monolia, are characterized by fine sand of a golden hue that contrasts wonderfully with the intense green of the surrounding vegetation and the vibrant blue of the sea. It is not the white coral sand of other exotic beaches, but sand of volcanic origin that gives it a particular shine under the Greek sun. Walking barefoot, we notice its softness, making it ideal for long walks or simply for lying down and enjoying the warm sun. In some smaller coves or on the edges of the beaches, it is possible to find a mix of sand with small pebbles or shells, adding a natural and wild touch to the landscape.

The Water: A Spectacle of Transparency

But if the sand captivates us, the water completely enchants us. The waters of Lichadonisia are of astonishing transparency, allowing us to see the seabed with exceptional clarity, even at several meters depth. The color is a palette of blues and turquoises that change intensity depending on the depth and sunlight, creating a hypnotic visual spectacle. This clarity is largely due to the absence of large urban settlements or nearby industries, which keeps the marine ecosystem in an almost pristine state.
