Introduction

We are facing one of the most spectacular and iconic beaches on the Biscay coast: Playa de Laga. Located in the picturesque municipality of Ibarrangelu, this natural gem is much more than just a sandy beach; it is a true sanctuary for nature lovers, surfers, and those seeking tranquility. Nestled in the heart of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, Laga offers us a dreamlike landscape, where the imposing dune and the characteristic Ogoño rock watch over a fine, golden sand beach, bathed by the powerful waves of the Cantabrian Sea.

From the moment we set foot on Laga, we feel that special connection with the environment. Its atmosphere is a perfect mix between the wild and the accessible, the sporty and the relaxing. It's a beach that lives to the rhythm of the tides and the wind, transforming with each season, but always maintaining its untamed essence and its unaltered beauty. For us, visiting Laga is always a rejuvenating experience, a way to reconnect with the force of nature and to enjoy one of the most privileged landscapes in the Basque Country.

How to Get to Playa de Laga

Getting to Playa de Laga is relatively straightforward, although we must consider that its location in a protected natural environment implies certain particularities. The most comfortable way to access is by car. From Bilbao, we will take the BI-631 towards Mungia and then the BI-2238 towards Gernika-Lumo, continuing afterwards on the same BI-2238 towards Laga. The road will gradually reveal increasingly green and winding landscapes, hinting at the beauty that awaits us.

Parking

Once near the beach, we will find several parking areas, both paid and free, although the latter tend to fill up quickly during the high season. It is advisable to arrive early, especially on summer weekends, to secure a good spot. There are also regulated parking options that facilitate vehicle rotation. We always prefer to get up early to avoid crowds and enjoy the beach during its calmest moments.

Public Transport

Public transport to Laga is more limited, but it exists. There are Bizkaibus bus lines connecting Gernika-Lumo with Ibarrangelu and its surroundings, including stops near the beach. However, the schedules can be less frequent and the last part of the journey might require a walk. For us, the freedom offered by the car is the preferred option for thoroughly exploring this area.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Laga welcomes us with fine, golden sand that stretches for almost 600 meters, inviting us to walk barefoot and feel the softness under our feet. It is clean, well-maintained sand, characteristic of quality beaches in Bizkaia. The contrast with the intense green of the surrounding vegetation and the vibrant blue of the sea is simply spectacular, creating a color palette that captivates us at first sight.

As for the water, the waters of Laga are famous for their roughness and cleanliness, which has earned it the Blue Flag distinction on numerous occasions. The sea here has a very marked Atlantic character, with constant waves that make it a paradise for surfers. For swimmers, this means we must be cautious and always respect the lifeguards' instructions, especially when the waves are large. The water temperature is typical of the Cantabrian Sea, refreshing in summer and a challenge for the bravest in other seasons. The water's transparency often allows us to see the sandy bottom, and it's a delight to feel how the waves envelop us with their strength.

Services and Facilities

Despite its natural and somewhat wild character, Playa de Laga has a series of services and facilities that make it comfortable and safe for all visitors. For us, this combination of nature and comfort is one of its great attractions.

• Lifeguards: During the bathing season, the beach has a highly qualified lifeguard service, which watches over our safety and informs us about the sea state and currents. It is essential to always follow their instructions.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: We will find modules with public showers and toilets, which are well-maintained and essential for our comfort after a day at the beach.
• Chiringuitos: The traditional chiringuitos (beach bars) right on the sand are not lacking, where we can enjoy a refreshing drink, an ice cream, or even a light meal with sea views. They are places with a very authentic and relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a break.
• Parking: As already mentioned, there are parking areas available, facilitating access to the beach.
• Equipment Rental: Given its fame as a surf destination, in Laga and its surroundings we can easily find surf schools and rental points for boards and wetsuits. This is ideal if we want to try this sport or if we simply couldn't bring our own equipment.
