Introduction
If there's a spot in southern Tenerife that takes our breath away with its authenticity and untamed beauty, that is, without a doubt, Playa de la Tejita. Located in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, this natural gem stretches for over a kilometer, offering a vast space to disconnect and immerse yourself in the serenity of the Atlantic. Unlike other more urbanized beaches on the island, Tejita retains a wild and pristine spirit, framed by the majestic silhouette of Montaña Roja, a volcanic cone that rises imposingly at one end, providing a simply spectacular backdrop.
For us, visiting Playa de la Tejita is an experience that goes beyond a simple day of sun and sea. It's an invitation to connect with nature in its purest state, to let yourself be carried away by the sound of the waves and the sea breeze. It's a place where time seems to stand still, where worries dissipate with each wave breaking on the shore. It's one of those Tenerife beaches that, once you know it, stays etched in your memory, inviting you to return again and again.
How to Get to Playa de la Tejita
Getting to Playa de la Tejita is relatively straightforward, especially if we travel by car, which is the most comfortable option for most visitors. From Tenerife South Airport (TFS), we're just a few minutes' drive away, making it an ideal stop both upon arrival and when bidding farewell to the island. We must take the TF-1 highway and exit towards El Médano. Once there, the signs to the beach are clear, leading us to a large and free parking area, although it can fill up quickly during high season or on weekends.
For those who prefer public transport, the TITSA bus line 470 connects us from Granadilla station to El Médano, and from El Médano we can walk about 15-20 minutes to the beach, or take a taxi. The walk from El Médano is pleasant, following the coastline and enjoying the views. It's an option we recommend if we want to stretch our legs and enjoy the scenery before reaching our final destination.
The Sand and Water
Playa de la Tejita surprises us with golden-colored sand, fine and soft to the touch, which contrasts wonderfully with the deep blue of the ocean. It's a delight to walk barefoot along its extensive shore, feeling the warmth under our feet. The waters here are crystal clear and clean, inviting us for a refreshing swim. However, it's important to consider that, being a beach open to the Atlantic, it can be exposed to winds, especially at certain times of the year, which sometimes generates moderate waves. This makes it attractive for some water sports, but always with caution.
The water's transparency is a gift for snorkeling enthusiasts, although marine life is not as abundant as in other rockier areas. Despite its exposure, the feeling of vastness and freedom offered by the combination of its sand and waters is incomparable. It's a place where we can swim, float, and simply let ourselves be carried by the current, enjoying the purity of an environment that remains virtually untouched.
Services and Facilities
Despite its wild character, Playa de la Tejita has some essential services that make our visit more comfortable, without detracting one bit from its natural charm. We will find free parking zones, which is a great relief, although as mentioned, they can be busy. On the beach, especially near the main access, one or two chiringuitos (beach bars) are usually located, offering us drinks, snacks, and light meals, ideal for replenishing energy after a good sunbathing session.
During the high season, and at specific times, the beach has lifeguard service, which gives us additional peace of mind when enjoying a swim. There are also bathrooms/WCs available, generally associated with the chiringuitos. However, it's important to remember that this is not a beach with massive tourist infrastructure; we shouldn't expect showers on every corner, or umbrella and sunbed rentals managed by the town council, although the chiringuitos may offer them. The philosophy here is one of a more natural and autonomous enjoyment, which contributes to its relaxed atmosphere.
Best Time to Visit
Tenerife enjoys a privileged climate all year round, known as the 'eternal spring', which means Playa de la Tejita is an appealing destination in any season. However, for us, there are nuances that can influence the experience. The months of spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are usually ideal. The weather is mild, temperatures are pleasant, and the influx of tourists is lower than in the height of summer, allowing us to enjoy the beach with more space and tranquility.
During summer (June to August), temperatures are higher and the beach is busier, especially on weekends. Winter (December to February) is also an excellent option, with sunny days and mild temperatures that invite walking and sunbathing, although the water may be a bit cooler. If we want to avoid the wind, which can sometimes blow strongly in this area, the summer months are usually calmer, but there's no guarantee. In any case, we will always find a perfect day to enjoy the beauty of Tejita.
