From our perspective as beach tourism experts, the Playa de la Concha de Artedo is undoubtedly one of those jewels that Asturias jealously hides, but once discovered, becomes an unforgettable corner. Located in the idyllic municipality of Cudillero, this beach offers us a coastal experience that combines natural beauty with the tranquility and services needed to enjoy a perfect day in the sun. It is a natural refuge, a 'shell' that, as its name suggests, embraces and protects its visitors from the outside hustle and bustle and the strong waves that sometimes characterize the Cantabrian coast.

Upon arriving at the Playa de la Concha de Artedo, the first thing that captivates us is its surroundings. Framed by cliffs covered in lush vegetation and the intense green characteristic of the Asturian landscape, this beach offers us a postcard-perfect image. It is a place where time seems to stand still, where the sound of waves gently breaking mixes with the song of birds, inviting us to disconnect and immerse ourselves in calm. Its orientation and the shape of the bay protect it from the prevailing winds, creating an ideal microclimate for bathing and relaxation, a true paradise among the beaches of Asturias.

How to Get to Playa de la Concha de Artedo

Accessing the Playa de la Concha de Artedo is relatively straightforward, which adds to its appeal, especially for those traveling with children or seeking comfort. We always recommend planning the route, although the signage in the area is quite good. If we come from the A-8 highway (Autovía del Cantábrico), the nearest exit is Artedo/Lamones. From there, we will join the N-632 and follow the signs towards Artedo and, subsequently, towards the beach.

Access by Car

The car is the most comfortable and common option to reach this beach in Cudillero. The road descending to the beach is narrow in some sections but is well-paved. Upon reaching the vicinity, we will find a good-sized Parking lot, which is a great relief, especially in the summer months. Although it may fill up during peak season, turnover is usually smooth. From the parking lot, access to the sand is direct and requires almost no effort, making it ideal for families with strollers or people with reduced mobility (although full access to the sand is not guaranteed, the proximity of the parking helps).

Public Transport

Although there are bus lines connecting Cudillero with other Asturian towns, reaching the Playa de la Concha de Artedo directly by public transport can be a bit more complicated and would require a considerable walk from the nearest stop in the village of Artedo or Lamones. Therefore, to fully enjoy the comfort and flexibility, we advise using a private vehicle.

The Sand and Water

The particularity of the Playa de la Concha de Artedo lies in the composition of its ground. We are not facing a typical fine, golden sandy beach; instead, we find a fascinating mix of coarse sand and pebbles of different sizes. This characteristic, far from detracting from its charm, gives it a unique personality and a different feel underfoot. The pebbles polished by the sea add an aesthetic nuance and are perfect for children to search for 'treasures' or build their own natural sculptures.

A Calm Sea

The waters of this beach in Cudillero are, in general, surprisingly calm. Thanks to the shell-like shape of the bay and the protection of the surrounding cliffs, the waves are usually moderate, making it an exceptionally safe place for bathing, even for children and those who are not entirely comfortable with strong waves. The transparency of the water invites immersion, and on sunny days, turquoise and emerald tones mix with the deep blue of the Cantabrian Sea, creating a visual spectacle we love.

The cleanliness of the water is another point to highlight, something that is often rewarded with the awarding of the Blue Flag, a quality environmental distinction that the Playa de la Concha de Artedo has held on numerous occasions. This gives us the peace of mind of knowing we are in a well-maintained environment that respects nature.

Services and Facilities

One of the aspects we value most in a beach, especially when traveling with family, is the availability of services. And at the Playa de la Concha de Artedo, although it is a natural setting, we find good infrastructure that guarantees a comfortable and pleasant stay. We are pleasantly surprised that a beach with these characteristics maintains such a good balance between its wild state and modern comforts.

Among the most relevant services it offers, we highlight:

• Lifeguard Service: During the bathing season, the beach has a Lifeguard service, which provides us with great peace of mind when enjoying a swim, especially if we are with children. Safety is always a priority.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: Essential for freshening up and maintaining hygiene after a dip. The availability of clean Showers and Toilets/WC is a plus we always appreciate.
• Parking: As already mentioned, the ample Parking greatly facilitates access and avoids worries about where to leave the car.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: On the beach itself or in its immediate surroundings, especially during peak season, Chiringuitos (beach bars) are usually set up where we can have a drink, an ice cream, or even a snack. Furthermore, in the nearby village of Artedo and in Cudillero, we will find excellent Restaurants to sample the local cuisine. It is a pleasure to be able to enjoy a good meal with sea views.
