We are talking about Playa de La Chapineta, a spot that, while not as well-known as other large sandy stretches in the region, possesses a particular charm that makes it unforgettable. Located in the picturesque hamlet of La Azohía, this beach is the perfect embodiment of Mediterranean tranquility and beauty, offering a serene escape from the daily hustle and bustle.

How to Get to Playa de La Chapineta

Getting to Playa de La Chapineta is relatively straightforward, although it requires a small detour from the main routes, which contributes to its more intimate and less crowded atmosphere. If we are coming from Cartagena, we will take the RM-E22 road towards Mazarrón and then the RM-E23 towards La Azohía. Once in the village, we follow the signs to the beach area. La Chapineta is located at the eastern end of La Azohía bay, bordering other small coves and the main beach of the village.

Access by car is comfortable, and although it doesn't have a huge parking lot right on the sand, in the vicinity of La Azohía and along the coastal road we will find various parking areas, some free and some paid, especially during the high season. From there, a short walk will take us directly to the shore. It is important to consider that, being a more secluded beach, parking space can be limited on days of high attendance, so we recommend arriving early if we want to secure a good spot.

For those who prefer public transport, the options are more limited. There are bus lines connecting Cartagena with La Azohía, especially in summer, but once in the village, the trip to Playa de La Chapineta is usually done on foot. The good news is that the walk is pleasant and allows us to enjoy the charm of the village and the views of the bay.

The Sand and the Water

When we talk about Playa de La Chapineta, one of the first aspects that come to mind is the quality of its sand and the transparency of its waters. We are facing a beach with fine sand, of a golden hue, that invites us to walk barefoot and relax under the sun. It is clean sand, pleasant to the touch, perfect for building sandcastles or simply for lying down and feeling its warmth.

The sea at La Chapineta is, without a doubt, its greatest attraction. Its waters are of an impressive turquoise blue, with a clarity that allows us to easily see the seabed. They are calm waters, protected by the orientation of the bay, which makes them an exceptionally safe place for swimming, even for the little ones. The gentle slope of the entrance to the sea makes it easy for children to enjoy without risks, and the absence of strong currents is a plus for parents' peace of mind.

The seabed, although predominantly sandy, has some rocky areas where marine life is more abundant. This makes it a small paradise for snorkeling enthusiasts, who can explore the diversity of fish and algae that inhabit these waters. The water temperature, especially in the summer months, is very pleasant, inviting long swims and refreshing dips. In short, it is one of those Cartagena (La Azohía) beaches where the quality of the swim is guaranteed.

Services and Facilities

Despite its more secluded atmosphere, Playa de La Chapineta benefits from the tourist infrastructure of La Azohía, offering a series of services that make our stay more comfortable and pleasant. Although it is not a beach with a profusion of facilities, we find the essentials to enjoy a worry-free day at the beach.

Among the available services, we highlight the presence of showers to rinse off the salt and sand after swimming, something that is always appreciated. Although parking is not directly on the sand, as we already mentioned, there are nearby options that facilitate access by car. During the high season, the lifeguard service watches over our safety, providing peace of mind to swimmers and especially to families with children.

Regarding the gastronomic offer, although Playa de La Chapineta does not have chiringuitos directly on the sand, a few meters away, on the main beach of La Azohía, we will find several chiringuitos and restaurants where we can enjoy local cuisine, with specialties of fresh fish and rice dishes. It is also possible to rent sun umbrellas and sun loungers in the area, which allows us to travel lighter and secure a good spot for resting. Furthermore, there are public bathrooms/WCs nearby, maintaining hygiene and comfort for all visitors.

Best Time to Visit

The choice of the best time to visit Playa de La Chapineta will largely depend on our personal preferences and what we are looking for in our beach experience. However, we can offer some recommendations based on the climate and the number of visitors.

For us, the high season, which covers the months of July and August, is ideal if we are looking for the full heat of summer, the warmest waters, and the greatest offer of services and activities in the surroundings. It is when life in La Azohía is at its peak.
