How to Get to Playa de la Caleta de Vélez

Getting to Playa de la Caleta de Vélez is relatively straightforward, whether we're coming from Málaga city or other points on the eastern Costa del Sol. We usually opt for the convenience of the A-7 motorway (Autovía del Mediterráneo), taking exit 272 towards Vélez-Málaga/Torre del Mar/Caleta de Vélez. Once we exit, the signs to the port or Caleta de Vélez itself are quite clear. The journey from Málaga usually takes about 30-40 minutes, depending on traffic.

By Car

This is the most popular option and, in our opinion, the most comfortable. The beach has parking areas nearby, especially near the port and along the promenade. Although in high season it can be a bit more challenging to find a spot right on the front line, there are always options on adjacent streets or in informal parking areas. We always recommend arriving early to secure a good spot, especially if visiting the beach on a weekend.

By Bus

For those who prefer public transport, there are bus lines connecting Vélez-Málaga, Torre del Mar, and Málaga city with Caleta de Vélez. The Torre del Mar bus station is very close, and from there, several local lines take us to the beach. It's a practical and economical alternative that allows us to forget about the car for a day.

On Foot or by Bicycle

If we are staying in Torre del Mar or in the Caleta de Vélez village itself, we can reach the beach comfortably on foot or by bicycle, enjoying the pleasant promenade that connects both towns. It's a fantastic way to get some exercise and soak up the coastal atmosphere before taking a dip.

The Sand and Water

Playa de la Caleta de Vélez offers us a combination of dark sand and gravel, which we classify as 'mixed sand'. Although it's not the fine, golden sand we sometimes imagine, its texture is pleasant and doesn't stick as much as others. It's a type of ground that heats up less under the sun, which is a relief on hot summer days. Under our feet, we'll feel that peculiar mix that makes it unique.

The waters here are generally very calm and shallow near the shore, making it an exceptionally safe place for the little ones. It's one of those Málaga beaches where we can let the children play with some freedom, knowing the waves won't give them any scares. The water clarity is usually good, and its temperature, typically Mediterranean, invites us to a refreshing and prolonged swim. The fact that it's protected by the port's breakwater contributes to that calm we so appreciate.

Caleta de Vélez is a beach that stands out for its excellent range of services, designed to ensure our comfort and enjoyment. We always value finding everything we need within reach, and here that's a reality:

• Showers and Toilets/WC: Essential for freshening up and staying clean after a swim. They are well-maintained and easily accessible.
• Parking: As mentioned, there are parking areas nearby, which makes arriving by car easier.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: One of this beach's great assets. Along the promenade and next to the port, we find a varied gastronomic offering where we can taste the best 'pescaíto frito' (fried fish) and the famous 'espetos de sardinas' (sardine skewers). They are fantastic places to eat or have a drink with sea views.
• Lifeguard Service: During the bathing season, the beach has a lifeguard service that watches over our safety, giving us additional peace of mind, especially if we're with children.
• Sunshades and Sun Loungers: For those who prefer not to carry their own equipment, there is the possibility of renting sunshades and sun loungers, which is very convenient for spending the day relaxed under the sun.
• Full Accessibility: The beach is adapted for people with reduced mobility, with walkways and ramps that facilitate access to the shore. This is a very positive point and an example of inclusion we are pleased to highlight.

Best Time to Visit

For us, the best time to visit Playa de la Caleta de Vélez is undoubtedly spring (April-May) and early autumn (September-October). During these months, the climate in the Axarquía is exceptionally pleasant, with mild temperatures that invite us to enjoy the sun without the intense summer heat. Furthermore, the influx of tourists is lower, allowing us to enjoy greater tranquility and space on the beach.
