Upon arriving at La Arnia, one cannot help but feel an immediate connection with the land and the ocean. Its iconic rock formations, known as 'islets' or 'sea stacks', emerge from the water like stone guardians, creating a landscape that seems taken from another world. The beach, although modest in size, offers a refuge of golden sand that blends with the rocks, inviting us to explore every corner. How to Get to Playa de La Arnia

Getting to Playa de La Arnia is relatively simple, although it will require a final small effort that, we assure you, will be worth it. It is located in the municipality of Santa Cruz de Bezana, a few kilometers west of Santander, the capital of Cantabria. We always recommend the car as the most comfortable option for exploring this area of the coast, as public transport can be limited at certain times or seasons of the year.

By Car

If we are coming from Santander, the journey is short, about 15-20 minutes. We must take the A-67 highway towards Torrelavega and then the exit towards CA-231 in the direction of Liencres and Soto de la Marina. From there, we will follow the signs towards Soto de la Marina and, subsequently, towards Playa de La Arnia itself. We will see signs that will guide us without a problem. If we are coming from the west, for example, from Torrelavega, we will take the A-67 towards Santander and take the same exit.

Once near the beach, we will find a designated parking area at the top of the cliff. This parking lot is usually spacious, but in the summer months or on holidays it can fill up, so we advise you to arrive early to secure a good spot. From the parking lot, access to the sand is via a path and some stairs. It is a relatively easy descent, but we must consider that the terrain is uneven in some spots and is not adapted for people with reduced mobility or baby strollers. Wear comfortable shoes and be cautious, especially if the ground is wet.

By Public Transport

Although less direct, it is possible to get there by bus from Santander to Soto de la Marina or Liencres, and from there, we could consider a taxi or even a walk, although the latter option is quite long (more than 30 minutes) and we do not recommend it if we are carrying luggage. For a more comfortable and flexible experience, we insist that the car is the best option for visiting Playa de La Arnia.

The Sand and the Water

Playa de La Arnia offers us a unique contrast experience regarding its sand and waters. The sand we find in this cove is fine and of a beautiful golden color, very pleasant to the touch and perfect for laying out a towel and enjoying the sun. However, what truly defines the ground of La Arnia is its mixed character. As the tide goes out, the beach reveals its true geological essence, with the appearance of impressive rock formations, 'islets', and rock platforms that extend across the sandy area. These rocks, sculpted by erosion, are the hallmark of La Arnia and what make it one of the most photogenic beaches in Cantabria.

The water, on the other hand, is typically Cantabrian: cool and crystal clear. The water quality is usually excellent, inviting a refreshing swim. However, due to its open location to the sea and the presence of rocks, we must be cautious. Currents can be strong at times, and the entry into the water may have stones in some areas, so we recommend wearing water shoes if we plan to explore the rocky pools or swim more peacefully. The transparency of the water, especially on calm days, allows us to observe the seabed and is ideal for snorkeling, an activity that, as we will see, is very popular here.

The interaction between the sand and the rocks creates a dynamic landscape that changes drastically with the tides. At high tide, the beach shrinks to a narrow strip of sand, almost swallowed by the sea, while at low tide, it expands, revealing vast expanses of rock and sand, creating small natural pools and a paradise for exploration. We always advise checking the tide tables before planning the visit to make the most of the beauty of its rock formations and enjoy an unforgettable walk through this very special environment of the Santa Cruz de Bezana beach.

Playa de La Arnia, due to its wilder nature and its focus on conserving the natural environment, does not have a large number of services and facilities as we might find in more urbanized beaches. However, it does have the essentials to ensure a comfortable and safe visit, always under the premise of respecting its pristine character. We greatly appreciate that this balance has been maintained, allowing us to enjoy its beauty without excessive human intervention.
