How to Get to Playa de Kommos

Getting to Playa de Kommos is part of the adventure and, fortunately, quite straightforward if we plan well. The beach is located on the south coast of Crete, about 60-70 kilometers south of the city of Heraklion and its airport. The most comfortable and recommended way to get there is by rental car. We always choose this option in Crete, as it gives us the freedom to explore at our own pace and discover hidden corners.

From Heraklion, we will take the main E75 highway west, towards Rethymno and Chania, and then turn south at the exit towards Agia Varvara or Moires. Once in the Moires region, we will follow the signs towards the coast, passing through villages like Pitsidia or Matala. Playa de Kommos is situated between Kalamaki and Matala, easily accessible from both. There are several paths leading to the beach, and we will find informal Parking areas near the main access points, especially at the northern end where the few services are concentrated. The road is mostly paved, although the last stretches may be well-maintained dirt tracks. The journey offers typical Cretan landscapes, with olive groves and small villages inviting us to savor the island's authenticity.

The Sand and the Water

Playa de Kommos is a true delight for the senses, and its sand and water are undoubtedly its greatest attractions. The sand is fine and golden, incredibly soft underfoot, making it perfect for long barefoot walks or for children to play building castles. This stretch of sand extends for several kilometers, offering us a spacious and never overcrowded area, even in the summer months. The predominant type of ground is sand, with no annoying rocks to hinder access to the sea or the enjoyment of a good swim.

As for the water, it is simply spectacular. We are met with the waters of the Libyan Sea, famous for their transparency and intense blue and turquoise hues. The waters of Kommos are crystal clear and clean, inviting us to dive in and enjoy a refreshing swim. Generally, the waves are moderate, making it a safe beach for swimming and for children to splash around. However, as with any open beach, it is advisable to be aware of currents, especially on windy days. The water temperature is pleasant during the summer months, and we can spend hours enjoying its coolness and beauty. Services and Facilities

One of the most distinctive features of Playa de Kommos is its natural and relatively pristine character. Unlike other more developed beaches Heraklion (Crete), Kommos maintains a low profile in terms of services and facilities, which contributes to its charm and tranquility. We highly value this authenticity, although it is important to go prepared.

At the northern end of the beach, near the archaeological area and the road from Pitsidia, we will find some Chiringuitos and traditional tavernas. These establishments offer cold drinks, snacks, and, in some cases, delicious local meals. It is also here where we can rent Sunbeds and umbrellas for a modest price, allowing us to enjoy shade and comfort on the hottest days. However, as we move further south, the beach becomes wilder and services disappear completely. Therefore, if we plan to spend the day in the quieter areas, it is essential to bring our own umbrella, water, snacks, and everything we might need.

Parking is generally informal, with spaces made available along the access paths. Do not expect large paved parking lots, but rather dirt areas to leave the car. There are no public showers or elaborate toilets beyond what the chiringuitos may offer. This is a beach for those seeking to disconnect from excessive comforts and connect with nature. Its status as an archaeological site and turtle nesting area also restricts development, preserving its original beauty.
