From the moment we set foot on Kythnos, the anticipation to see the famous Playa de Kolona grows with every sea breeze. And, dear travelers, this is not just any beach; it's one of those natural wonders that stays etched in your memory and heart forever. The Playa de Kolona is, without a doubt, the crown jewel of Kythnos and one of the most photogenic beaches in Greece. Its name, meaning 'column' or 'pillar', alludes to that narrow strip of sand resembling a natural bridge. It's a place where time seems to stand still, where the sound of the waves and the soft murmur of the wind are the only soundtrack. We discovered it a few years ago, and since then, it has taken our breath away on every visit, reminding us of the incredible beauty nature is capable of creating. How to Get to Playa de Kolona

Getting to Playa de Kolona is part of the adventure, and the journey, although sometimes challenging, rewards the effort tenfold. We have several options, and the choice will depend a lot on our adventurous spirit and the type of experience we're seeking.

Access by Sea

The most popular and, for many, the most comfortable and scenic way to reach Kolona is by sea. During the high season, especially from June to September, small tourist boats and water taxis regularly depart from Kythnos's main port, Merichas, and also from Loutra. These trips are usually short and offer us spectacular views of the Kythnos coastline, allowing us to admire the island's rugged geography from a unique perspective. It's an ideal option if we prefer to avoid the unpaved roads and enjoy a relaxed journey directly to the sand. Furthermore, some tours combine the visit to Kolona with other nearby coves and beaches, offering a full day of maritime exploration.

Access by Land

For the more adventurous or those who prefer the freedom of their own vehicle, Playa de Kolona is also accessible by land. However, it's essential to know that the road leading to it is, for the most part, an unpaved dirt track, with some steep and rocky sections. We always recommend renting a 4x4 vehicle or a cross motorcycle if we plan to go by land, as a conventional car could have difficulties, especially on the final ascent and descent. The journey from Chora or Merichas can take between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on speed and road conditions. Despite the difficulty, the trip gifts us with impressive panoramic views of the island, and, in the end, the reward of reaching this paradise on our own is immense. There is a small informal parking area at the end of the road, just before the beach, where we can leave the vehicle.

The sand of Kolona is simply sublime. Of a pale golden color and fine texture, it is incredibly soft to the touch, inviting us to walk barefoot and feel its warmth under our feet. This sand forms the distinctive tongue that connects Kythnos with the islet of Agios Loukas, creating a perfect surface to lay out our towel and enjoy the Greek sun. Unlike other beaches in Kythnos that may have pebbles or coarser sand, Kolona's is a pleasure for the senses, ideal for children to play and for us to relax without worrying about the discomfort of an uneven surface. Its composition and color contribute to the beach's luminosity, making it shine under the Aegean sun.

Crystal-Clear and Calm Waters

But if the sand is spectacular, the water of Kolona is downright magical. We are faced with crystal-clear waters that range between turquoise and emerald blue tones, with a transparency that allows us to see the seabed with astonishing clarity. Being protected by the formation of the sand tongue, the two bays usually have very calm waters, especially on days without strong wind. This makes them an ideal place for swimming, snorkeling, and simply floating, enjoying the peace and serenity of the surroundings. The water temperature, especially in the summer months, is pleasantly warm, perfect for a refreshing dip. The purity of these waters is such that we will feel as if we are in a giant natural pool, surrounded by a pristine and spectacular landscape.

Services and Facilities

The beauty of Playa de Kolona lies largely in its wild and natural character, which implies that services and facilities are limited compared to more organized beaches in Greece. And, honestly, we believe it should be this way to preserve its charm.

Limited but Sufficient Offer

During the high season, usually from July to early September, it is common to find a chiringuito or a mobile kantina on the beach. This improvised establishment usually offers refreshing drinks, cold beers, some simple snacks, and perhaps even a light dish.
