How to Get to Playa de Kastellia

This beautiful cove is located on the east coast of Karpathos, not far from Pigadia, the island's capital and main port. From Pigadia, the journey is relatively short and picturesque, offering spectacular views of the Aegean Sea and the island's mountainous landscape. For us, the best way to get there and explore the island with complete freedom is to rent a car or a scooter. The roads in Karpathos, although sometimes winding, are usually in good condition and well signposted, making navigation easy.

• Car or Scooter: Without a doubt, the most recommended option. It allows us to explore at our own pace and discover other nearby coves and villages. The journey from Pigadia takes approximately 15-20 minutes. There is a small space for parking right above the beach or in the surrounding area, although it can be busier during high season.
• Taxi: A comfortable option if we prefer not to drive. Taxis in Karpathos are reliable, and the price from Pigadia to Kastellia is reasonable.
• Bus: Although Karpathos has a bus service connecting Pigadia with some villages and beaches of Karpathos, the frequency to Kastellia might be limited or require a walk from the nearest stop. It is always advisable to check the updated schedules at the Pigadia bus station.

The Sand and Water

The experience at Playa de Kastellia begins the moment our feet touch its unique surface. Here, we will not find the typical fine, golden sand that characterizes other Greek beaches. Instead, Kastellia welcomes us with a charming mix of small pebbles polished by the sea and coarser sand. This composition of pebbles and mixed sand has its own advantages: it is incredibly clean, does not stick to the skin like fine sand, and gives the landscape a unique and natural texture. Walking on it is a pleasant sensation, and the sound the pebbles make as they are dragged by the waves is a relaxing melody.

But if the sand is special, the water at Kastellia is simply spectacular. We dare say it is one of the main attractions of this beach in Karpathos. The visibility is exceptional, making it a paradise for snorkeling lovers. We can spend hours exploring the seabed, observing small fish swimming among the rocks and the soft underwater vegetation. The water temperature, especially during the summer months, is perfect for a refreshing and prolonged swim, inviting us to immerse ourselves again and again in its crystal-clear embrace. There are no strong currents, making it very safe and pleasant for swimming calmly.
