Today we take you to discover Playa de Kanegra, a hidden gem that, although part of a tourist resort, retains a natural and relaxed atmosphere that captivated us from the first moment. Located in the northernmost part of the Croatian coast, very close to the border with Slovenia, this beach is the perfect destination for those seeking a combination of scenic beauty, pristine waters and a wide range of services.

Playa de Kanegra is not just a place to sunbathe; it's a complete experience. Its smooth pebbles and the Adriatic Sea, with its turquoise and emerald tones, invite you to swim and completely disconnect. It's an ideal destination for families with children, couples looking for romance or groups of friends who want to enjoy Mediterranean life. From the moment we set foot on its shores, we felt that salty breeze and the scent of pine that reminds us we are in a true Croatian paradise. We were pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and care of the beach, a testament to why it proudly holds the Blue Flag, a distinction of environmental quality and services.

How to Get to Playa de Kanegra

Getting to Playa de Kanegra is relatively easy, especially if we travel by car. We chose this option, as it offered us the freedom to explore the surroundings. Kanegra is located about 10 kilometers northwest of Umag, the largest and best-known city in this part of Istria. From Umag, the road is direct and well signposted, taking us through very pleasant coastal landscapes. The resort has a large parking lot, which is a great advantage, although in high season it can fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving early.

By Car

As mentioned, the car is the most comfortable option. If we come from inland Croatia or neighboring countries like Slovenia or Italy, we can take the A9 highway (Istarski ipsilon) and then turn off towards Umag and follow the signs to Kanegra. The roads are in excellent condition and the journey is very picturesque.

By Public Transport

Although there is no direct bus line that drops us off right at Kanegra beach, we can reach Umag by bus from the main cities of Croatia (Pula, Rijeka, Zagreb) or even from Slovenia. From Umag, we would have to take a taxi or a local bus (if available, although they are less frequent for this route) to the Kanegra resort. It's a less practical option if we're carrying luggage, but feasible.

By Plane

The nearest international airport is Pula (PUY), approximately 85 kilometers to the south. From Pula, we can rent a car directly at the airport or take a bus to Umag and then follow the options mentioned. Another option, if we fly to Slovenia, is Ljubljana Airport (LJU), about 130 kilometers away, which also offers good car rental connections.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Kanegra is distinguished by its pebble-type ground, a common feature on many Croatian Adriatic beaches. We, who are used to fine sand, were surprised at first, but we soon realized its advantages. The pebbles are smooth and polished by the sea, making them very pleasant to walk on, and best of all, they don't stick to the skin or towels. However, for greater comfort, especially for the little ones or if we plan to spend a lot of time in the water, we highly recommend bringing water shoes or aqua socks. They are a lifesaver!

The water... ah, the water at Kanegra is simply spectacular. It is of astonishing clarity, allowing us to see the seabed even several meters deep. The colors range from a crystal blue at the shore to an intense turquoise further out. The water quality is excellent, which, along with the cleanliness of the beach, has earned it the Blue Flag distinction. It's perfect for swimming, snorkeling and simply cooling off. The entrance to the sea is gradual, making it very safe for children, who can play at the shore without worrying about strong currents or sudden drops. The water temperature in the summer months (July and August) is delightfully warm, around 24-26°C, ideal for long swims.

Services and Facilities

One of the great advantages of Playa de Kanegra is the complete range of services and facilities we found. Being part of a tourist resort, we practically lacked nothing during our visit. This makes the experience very comfortable and worry-free, ideal for a relaxing holiday.

Among the services we valued most, we highlight:

• Sun Umbrellas and Sun Loungers: There are wide areas where we can rent sun umbrellas and comfortable sun loungers to spend the day. We preferred the natural shade of the pine trees that border the beach, but it's good to know the option is there.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: The cleanliness and availability of freshwater showers and toilets are impeccable, something essential after a swim in the sea.
• Beach Bars and Restaurants: During the day at the beach and within the resort, we found several beach bars where we could have a refreshment, an ice cream or a snack. There are also restaurants offering everything from fast food to more elaborate dishes from local and international cuisine. We tried a couple of them and the quality was quite good.
• Lifeguard Service: During the high season, the beach has lifeguards who watch over the safety of swimmers, which gave us great peace of mind, especially with children.
• Parking: As already mentioned, the resort has a large parking lot, although it may be paid during the high season.
