How to Get to Playa de Kalamos

Getting to Playa de Kalamos is relatively straightforward, especially if we are in the Greek capital. From Athens, traveling by car is the most comfortable and direct option, taking approximately 1 to 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on traffic. We must take the Athens-Lamia National Highway (E75) and then turn off towards the east coast, following signs for Kalamos or Agioi Apostoloi, a coastal village very close to and often associated with the beach.

By Car

The car offers us the flexibility to explore the surroundings at our own pace. The route is scenic in parts, passing through rural landscapes and small towns. Parking is available near the beach, often organized and with a fee during the high season, or informal parking areas along the coastal road. We recommend arriving early on summer weekends to secure a good spot.

By Public Transport

Although less direct, it is possible to reach it by public transport. We can take an intercity bus (KTEL Attikis) from Athens (Mavromateon station) to Kalamos or Agioi Apostoloi. Once in the village, the beach is usually within walking distance or a short taxi ride away. However, frequency and schedules can be limited, so we recommend checking in advance, especially if traveling in the low season.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Kalamos surprises us with its unique composition. Unlike purely sandy beaches, here we find a pleasant mix of smooth pebbles and small stones, interspersed with some areas of finer sand. This combination gives it a distinctive character and contributes to the exceptional clarity of its waters. The pebbles, polished by the constant ebb and flow of the waves, are comfortable to walk on and, furthermore, prevent the water from becoming murky, keeping it always transparent and inviting.

The waters of Playa de Kalamos are, without a doubt, one of its greatest attractions. Of an emerald blue color that intensifies as we go further in, they are generally calm and shallow at the shore, making them perfect for children and for those who enjoy a relaxing swim. The water temperature is ideal during the summer months, warm and refreshing at the same time. Underwater visibility is excellent, inviting us to practice snorkeling and discover the modest marine life that inhabits among the rocks and pebbles on the bottom.

The beach has several chiringuitos (beach bars) and restaurants right on the beach or very close to it. Here we can enjoy a refreshing drink, a Greek coffee, or savor delicious dishes from local and international cuisine. From a quick souvlaki to fresh grilled fish, the gastronomic options are varied and will satisfy all palates. They are the ideal place to take shelter from the sun at midday and replenish energy.

Showers and Toilets

In the more organized areas of the beach and at the dining establishments, it is common to find showers to rinse off the salt and sand after swimming. Toilets/WCs are also usually available at the chiringuitos and restaurants, ensuring the hygiene and comfort of visitors.

Parking and Lifeguards

As mentioned, parking is available, although in the high season it may be paid or require arriving early. During the summer months, Playa de Kalamos has lifeguards who watch over the safety of bathers, adding an extra layer of peace of mind, especially for families with children.

Best Time to Visit

The choice of when to visit Playa de Kalamos can significantly influence our experience. We always recommend the months of late spring (late May, early June) and early autumn (September) as the best time to visit. During these periods, the weather is glorious, with pleasant temperatures inviting for swimming and relaxation, but without the stifling heat of midsummer. Furthermore, the influx of tourists is lower, allowing us to enjoy the beach with more tranquility and space.
