Here, the Mediterranean shows itself in its purest state, with coves and small beaches that retain their original charm, far from mass urbanization and tourist bustle.

When we think of Castellón beaches, we often picture the wide urban beaches with all services. However, Playa de Irta offers us a completely different experience. It's a journey to the essence of the Mediterranean, where the sound of the waves and the song of birds are the only soundtrack. Its waters, of astonishing transparency, invite swimming and exploration, while the surrounding landscape, dotted with pines, junipers and cliffs, reminds us of the importance of preserving these natural treasures. How to Get to Playa de Irta

Getting to Playa de Irta is part of the adventure, as its wild character implies a less conventional access than that of urban beaches. From Peñíscola, the most common starting point, we have several options, although the most recommended is always a private vehicle, especially if we plan to explore several coves throughout the day.

To access the coves closest to Peñíscola, such as Cala del Pebret or Cala Argilaga, we must take the CV-141 road that runs along the coast. As we enter the Sierra de Irta Natural Park, the asphalt gives way to dirt tracks, some of them quite rough. It is essential to drive with caution and at low speed. During the summer months, and to preserve the environment, access by private vehicle may be restricted to certain hours or areas, with a shuttle bus service from Peñíscola or Alcossebre to key points in the park being set up instead. It's always a good idea to check local regulations before visiting, especially in high season.

Regarding parking, being a protected natural environment, we will not find large designated parking lots. It is common to park the car on the shoulders of the dirt tracks, always respecting signage and without invading protected areas or pathways. It is important to remember that we are in a natural park, so we must be extremely respectful of the environment, avoiding leaving trash and always following the marked trails. For the more adventurous, it is also possible to arrive by bicycle from Peñíscola or Alcossebre, enjoying a pleasant ride along the coast and mountains.

The Sand and Water

The characteristics of the sand and water at Playa de Irta are, without a doubt, one of its greatest attractions and what distinguishes it from other beaches in the region. Here we will not find the typical fine, golden sand of urban beaches, but a fascinating mix that speaks of its natural origin and its interaction with the environment.

The type of sand in the coves of Irta is predominantly mixed. This means we can find stretches of coarser sand, combined with pebbles and small rocks polished by the sea. In some coves, like Cala del Pebret, the sand is lighter and of medium grain, while in others, like Cala Argilaga, pebbles and rocks predominate. This diversity of textures on the seabed and shore adds a special charm and a feeling of authenticity. We recommend wearing appropriate footwear for the water if you plan to explore thoroughly or if your feet are sensitive to stones.

But if there is something that leaves us speechless at Playa de Irta, it is the quality of its waters. They are simply spectacular: crystal clear, transparent, and of a turquoise blue that rivals the Caribbean. The purity of the water is due to the absence of large urban developments and the protection of the Natural Park. Underwater visibility is exceptional, making it a paradise for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. Here we can observe rich marine life, from small fish and crustaceans to meadows of Posidonia oceanica, a vital marine plant for the Mediterranean ecosystem and an indicator of the excellent health of the water. The water temperature is typically Mediterranean, pleasant from late spring well into autumn, inviting us to enjoy long swims in this idyllic setting.

Services and Facilities

Precisely because of its status as a Natural Park and its commitment to conservation, Playa de Irta does not have the extensive list of services and facilities we would find on an urban beach. And, honestly, that's part of its charm! The absence of massive infrastructure helps maintain its wild and natural essence, offering us a total disconnection experience.
