Himarë is not just a sun and sand destination; it's a place where time seems to stand still, inviting us to enjoy the calm and natural beauty that surrounds it. From the moment we set foot here, we feel a special connection with the Ionian Sea and the imposing mountains that embrace it.

How to Get to Playa de Himarë

Getting to Playa de Himarë is part of the adventure and, at the same time, an experience that gifts us with unforgettable landscapes. The most common option for most international travelers is to fly to Tirana International Airport (TIA) or, alternatively, to Corfu Airport (CFU) in Greece, from where you can take a ferry to Saranda and then continue by road. From Tirana, the drive takes approximately 4-5 hours, traveling along the impressive SH8 highway, known as the Albanian Riviera Route. This route, although winding, offers us spectacular panoramic views of the Ionian Sea and the small villages that dot the coast.

We rented a car, which is the most recommended way to explore the area at our own pace and discover hidden coves. The roads are generally in good condition, although some sections can be narrow or have sharp curves. There are also bus services connecting Himarë with larger cities like Tirana, Vlora, and Saranda. These buses are economical and reliable, although the schedules may be less flexible. Once in Himarë, the main beach is easily accessible on foot from most accommodations in the town, as it stretches along the promenade.

The Sand and Water

One of the most distinctive aspects of Playa de Himarë is its particular 'sand' and the purity of its waters. Here, we won't find the typical fine, golden sand, but a charming mix of smooth white pebbles with some coarse sand. This characteristic not only gives it a pristine appearance and a pleasant texture underfoot but also contributes to the astonishing clarity of the water. The pebbles act as a natural filter, allowing the sea to retain that crystal-clear transparency we so desire in a beach.

The water temperature, especially during the summer months (from June to September), is delightfully warm and refreshing at the same time, inviting us to spend hours swimming and enjoying the sun. It is a truly immersive experience that connects us with nature in its purest state.

Playa de Himarë is very well equipped to ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay for all its visitors. Along its length, we find a wide variety of services covering all our needs, from the most basic to leisure ones. One of the most valued amenities are the public showers, perfect for washing off the salt and sand after a refreshing dip in the sea. We also have access to clean and well-maintained bathrooms/WCs, which is essential on any beach.

For those seeking a day of total relaxation, there are numerous spots where we can rent umbrellas and sunbeds for a reasonable price, allowing us to enjoy the Mediterranean sun in total comfort. The beach has several chiringuitos and restaurants right on the promenade, where we can savor delicious local dishes, fresh seafood, or simply have a coffee or a refreshing drink while admiring the sea views. During the high season, a lifeguard service watches over our safety, giving us peace of mind to enjoy swimming. Furthermore, there are parking options nearby, although it may be paid during the busiest months. For the more active, there is equipment rental for water sports like kayaks or paddle surfboards, adding a touch of adventure to our visit to this magnificent beach of Vlora.

Best Time to Visit

Choosing the best time to visit Playa de Himarë depends largely on our personal preferences and the type of experience we are looking for. However, we can say that the months of June and September are, in our opinion, the most ideal. During these periods, the weather is warm and sunny, perfect for enjoying the beach and the sea, but with the advantage that the crowds are significantly smaller than in the peak of summer. We can find more affordable prices for accommodations and services, and the tranquility allows us to appreciate the beauty of the surroundings without feeling overwhelmed. The water temperatures are equally pleasant, inviting us to swim and practice water sports without any issues.
