And Playa de Heraion on the island of Samos, Greece, is undoubtedly one of those magical places that exceeds expectations. When we arrive at Playa de Heraion, the first thing that captivates us is the calm that can be felt. The waters, of an immaculate turquoise blue, gently lap a shoreline that combines sand and small pebbles, creating a charming visual contrast. The view stretches to the horizon, where the sea merges with a generally clear sky, and inland, where the majestic remains of the Temple of Hera rise like silent guardians of a glorious past. How to Get to Playa de Heraion

Getting to Playa de Heraion is relatively straightforward, which makes it even more attractive for visitors. We always recommend renting a car to explore Samos at our own pace, and this beach is an excellent example of why. From Pythagoreio, one of the most charming villages on the island and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the beach is just a 10-15 minute drive away, following a picturesque and well-signposted coastal road. The distance is approximately 6-7 kilometers, allowing for quick and comfortable access.

If we are coming from the island's capital, Samos Town (also known as Vathy), the journey is a bit longer, about 20-25 minutes, covering a distance of around 15-20 kilometers. The road is good and offers spectacular views of the coast and the island's interior. There is also the possibility of taking a local bus from Samos Town or Pythagoreio, although schedules may be less frequent, especially outside the high season. We always advise checking the timetables in advance if we opt for public transport.

For those arriving on the island by plane, Samos International Airport 'Aristarchos' (SMO) is very close to Pythagoreio, which means Playa de Heraion is accessible in less than 20 minutes by taxi or rental car from the terminal. Once near the beach, we will find informal parking areas along the road and near the tavernas, making it easy to leave the vehicle and enjoy without worries.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Heraion offers us a very particular and pleasant bathing experience. The shoreline is a harmonious combination of fine sand and small pebbles polished by the sea, giving it a very distinctive 'mixed' character. This mix of textures under our feet is comfortable and adds a natural and authentic touch to the beach. It is not a beach of pure, soft sand like others on the island, but precisely that mix of elements is part of its charm, and for many, it is preferable, as the pebbles help keep the water incredibly clear.

And speaking of the water, it is certainly one of the great attractions of this Samos beach. The Aegean waters here are of astonishing clarity, with shades ranging from crystal blue near the shore to deep turquoise further out. What we like most is its calmness. Being in a protected bay, the waves are minimal, creating a perfect natural pool for swimming, floating, and simply relaxing. Furthermore, the water is shallow for the first few meters, making it an exceptionally safe and pleasant place for young children, who can play and splash without worry.

The water temperature is another plus. During the summer months, from June to early October, the water remains pleasantly warm, inviting us to spend hours immersed in its coolness. The combination of this sand and pebbles, along with the purity and tranquility of the water, creates an idyllic atmosphere for bathing and resting, making every visit to Playa de Heraion a true pleasure for the senses.

Services and Facilities

Although Playa de Heraion is not a beach with massive tourist infrastructure, we consider it perfectly equipped to offer a comfortable and relaxing beach day. Its charm lies, in part, in its simplicity and the authentic atmosphere that has been maintained, away from the crowds of other more commercial beaches.

The services we find here are focused on the essentials for our enjoyment:

• Sunbeds and Umbrellas: On the beach, especially in front of the tavernas, it is possible to rent comfortable sunbeds and umbrellas. This allows us to enjoy the shade and rest without having to carry our own equipment. Prices are usually reasonable and often include table service from the nearby tavernas.
• Chiringuitos/Tavernas: This is one of the great advantages of Playa de Heraion. Several traditional Greek tavernas are located directly on the beach or just a few steps away. Here we can taste delicious local food, from fresh fish of the day to Greek salads, souvlaki, and other specialties. They are also perfect for having an iced coffee (frappé), a soft drink, or a cold beer while enjoying the sea views.
