If there is one place in Corfu that embodies the essence of tranquility and natural beauty, that is, without a doubt, Halikounas Beach. Located on the southwest coast of the island, this gem is a destination that captivates us from the first moment. Imagine a stretch of golden sand that extends for kilometers, bathed by the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea and flanked by the stunning Korission lagoon. It is a setting that invites disconnection, leisurely enjoyment, and connection with nature.

Halikounas Beach is not only one of the longest beaches in Corfu, but also one of the most authentic. Unlike other more crowded areas, here we find a perfect balance between services and a feeling of space and freedom. It is the kind of place where children can run without worries, where sun lovers can find their private corner, and where water sports enthusiasts have a perfect canvas for their passions. For us, it is an essential destination on any itinerary of the beaches of Greece, offering a genuine and memorable experience.

How to get to Halikounas Beach

Getting to Halikounas Beach is relatively simple, although we recommend having your own or a rental vehicle for greater comfort and to explore the surroundings. From the capital, Corfu (Kerkyra), the beach is about 25-30 kilometers southwest, which translates into a journey of approximately 40-50 minutes by car.

By car

This is the most popular and flexible option. From Corfu, we will take the main road heading towards the south of the island. Signs towards Agios Georgios or Lefkimmi will guide us initially. As we approach the area, we will see signage for the Korission lagoon and, eventually, for the beach itself. There are extensive areas of free parking along the beach, which is a great advantage, especially in high season.

By bus

There is a public bus service (KTEL Corfu) that connects Corfu with the main towns in the south. Although there is no direct stop at Halikounas Beach, we can take a bus that drops us off in nearby villages like Agios Georgios South or Moraitika, and from there take a taxi or, if we are adventurous, walk a considerable distance. However, for a comfortable visit to the beach and its surroundings, the car is the best choice.

The sand and the water

Halikounas Beach welcomes us with an extensive carpet of fine golden sand, incredibly soft underfoot. It is the kind of sand that invites you to walk barefoot for hours, to build sandcastles, or simply to lie down and feel its warmth. The width of the beach ensures that, even on the busiest days, we will always find a space for ourselves, without the feeling of overcrowding sometimes experienced at other beaches.

The waters of the Ionian Sea at Halikounas are simply spectacular. They are usually a transparent turquoise blue, with a clarity that allows us to see the sandy bottom. Furthermore, they are generally calm and shallow at the shore, making them ideal for swimming, especially for the little ones. The cleanliness of the water and sand is one of the reasons this beach often holds the Blue Flag, a mark of environmental quality. The water temperature is pleasant during the summer months, inviting long swims and enjoying the coolness of the sea.

Services and facilities

Despite its relaxed and natural atmosphere, Halikounas Beach offers a good variety of services that guarantee a comfortable and pleasant day. We have noticed that the beach achieves a perfect balance between maintaining its pristine charm and offering the necessary comforts for visitors.

Among the services we can find, the following stand out:

• Sunbeds and umbrellas: Along several sections of the beach, it is possible to rent umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds to protect ourselves from the sun and enjoy a restorative rest.
• Chiringuitos: Several chiringuitos dot the coast, offering refreshing drinks, snacks, ice cream, and, in some cases, light meals. They are perfect for having a bite without straying too far from the shore.
• Parking: As we already mentioned, there are extensive areas of free parking, which is a great relief on an island where parking can be a challenge elsewhere.
• Showers: To wash off the sand and salt after a good swim, we will find showers at various points on the beach.
• Lifeguard service: During the high season, the beach has lifeguard stations, which adds an extra layer of safety, especially for families with children.
• Equipment Rental: Some chiringuitos or water sports centers offer equipment rental for windsurfing, kitesurfing, or paddleboarding.

Best time to visit

The choice of when to visit Halikounas Beach depends largely on our preferences. Each season offers a slightly different experience.

Summer (June - August)

This is the high season, when temperatures are warmest, the sun shines intensely, and the sea water is at its most pleasant. It is the ideal time to fully enjoy the beach, swimming, and water sports. The services are in full operation and the atmosphere is livelier, although without becoming as crowded as on other beaches in Corfu. If we are looking for sun, heat, and all the comforts, summer is our time.
